    Computer Help

I dont know if this should go in the VideoGame section, as the thing I'm going to talk about is about a laptop and a Dreamcast.

    Okay heres the deal..

I'm getting a dreamcast (yay), and Phantasy Star Online, but I found out that the dreamcast only has a dial-up port on it, and not a ethernet.
So plugging it into my router, is out of the question.. (Unless theres a converter that can change dial-up to Ethernet/ vice versa)

    So, heres my question.
I have a wireless router, and my laptop is wireless too.
(So my laptop does get internet)

Since My laptop gets wireless internet from the router, if I plugged a dial-up cable into the back of my laptop, and plugged the other end of the dial-up cable into the router, would the Dreamcast get internet?

(Like, I think it would, as my laptop gets wireless DSL from my router, and if I plugged a Dial-Up cord from the dreamcast to my laptop, the laptop may be able to "give" some internet to my DC, as its connected to the laptop.)

Thanks for the help. I hope this isnt confusing

    Re: Computer Help

Sadly, this is all futile. The Phantasy Star Online servers closed down back in 2003/04.

Nope. They were turned back on, by the leader of Sega, so people could play PSO "forever".

      And there is private servers.

            Re: Computer Help

            No.

They sell ethernet adapters for Dreamcasts, they're just expensive and hard to find. I was lucky enough to get my greedy paws on one.

Private servers are still running for PSO, but they're not as popular as other DC games (Such as Chu-Chu Rocket and Quake 3, which, as of now, are the most popular)

If you do get the ethernet adapter, there is a fairly simple way to wire your Dreamcast to the internet and connect to private servers.

If you need to know anything, and I mean anything about the Dreamcast, from homebrew to running official games, I'm your man. Drop me a line if you need me.

            Edit: Found one on ebay

I've never tried it, but I think it should work. On your computer go to Start->Settings->Network Connections. Highlight the modem and wireless connections, then right-click on one of them and select Bridge Connections.

Hmm, Isnt there a thing that can convert Dialup to Ethernet?
(Like Dialup Male to Ethernet Female)

I swear I've seen one somewhere....

Nope. At least, in an 'all in one' solution like a silly cord you plug in.

And they all look male. I need one female.

Attach an ethernet connector to one end, and a phone connector to the other. Plug the ethernet cord into your router, and the dial-up into your dreamcast.

Why would you need one end to be female?

Ah never mind. I was thinking that, One end goes in dreamcast, and then the other end gets a ethernet cord pluged into it.
But this cord doesnt seem long enough, just incase my plan doesnt work, and then I have to plug it into a router...

                            Re: Computer Help

I've NEVER seen one of those before. I'm weary as to how it would work, personally. Trying to connect Ethernet to USB to Phone seems like as likely to work as jamming your phone line directly into coaxial line from the cable company and hearing a dial-tone.

Simply put, I can almost guarantee it won't be that easy. Ethernet and phone lines work differently from each other. Two different standards. Phone modems expect dial tones and transfer data differently from Ethernet cards, which don't use dial tones and have a much higher bandwidth limit. It seems like that is more of an alternative to null-modem cables--so it could act as a crossover cable.

I have no experience with this, so I could very well be wrong. But I can't honestly see how that'd work. To summarize, I doubt that that cable will do what you want it to do without a ton of hassle.
