    Computer Help >_>

I need help on how to play .mkv files. I did some research and found out I had to download some codecs which solved ALOT of problems I've had trying to view media files, but I can figure out how to run this.

I know very little about computers.

I just searched for Matroska video packs and got all the codecs I needed.

I recommend demuxing the files and then remuxing them in .avi format. More compatible, plays on any regular media player, and can be burned to a disc and played on a DivX-enabled DVD player. PM me; the process is a bit complicated, but definitely worth it.

mkvs play great in VLC, as someone already mentioned. You can also, using certain software, convert them into avis and then mpgs. That's what I do to put them on my PSP. The software isn't free though . The ones that work, which aren't free, are WinAVI and WinMPG. Demuxing/remuxing works, but takes a little time to do.

Actually, I can create AVI files with 100% free software, none of it pirated =)

I can also hardsub files, adding the subtitles directly to the video, so it becomes part of the video itself. If you know what you're doing, it's very easy. I can make an AVI without subtitles in... three steps at the very least. With subtitles, it takes maybe four or five at the least. However, I have to use a maximum of six programs at times to get everything to a level of compatibility.

Like I said though, if you can get it all onto a DVD to play in a DivX Player onto a TV, it's all worth it.

              Matroska Pack.

Has codecs for MKV, OGG, AVI, etc.

If that doesn't work (mine only recently crapped out on me while being unable to distinguish analogue and digital audio throughput during certain movies), try the K-Lite Codec Pack.

                ** NERD ALERT ** NERD ALERT **

MKV isn't a codec pack. It's simply a container. As is AVI. It contains audio and video data, which themselves require Codecs like DivX, XViD, H.264, etc. MKV is nice though since it can contain switchable subtitles. I'm not sure if AVI can or can not, but I've never seen it. Nonetheless, K-Lite Codec Pack should be able to play it through Media Player Classic (if you choose to install it).
