Didn't really know where to put this but, I'm looking for opinions on it so I figured CC would be appropriate (MODS feel free to move if wrong). I work at a pretty big restaraunt called Champps Americana. It started in Chicago and has branched out to (I think) most of the midwest and up through NY. I work in a corporate restaraunt; but not just any corporate restaraunt, the largest grossing one in the country. Last month our store made $640,000 by itself for the company. Today, the GM of the store came up to me and offered me a job as a server manager. I would be responsible for hiring new servers, working training sessions, helping out with problems related to servers in any way basicallly. My starting salary would only be $41K a year but I would possibly get incentive pay. It seems like a no brainer, but here's the catch; I am also a full-time student at Minnesota's Carlson School for Business and Management. It's a top ten business school in the country and I'm a junior (I will graduate in fall 08, since I'm a semester behind). I am a very good student with a 3.86 GPA and upon graduating, planned on applying to some major businesses for internships around here like 3M or Best Buy or General Mills. I can't go to school and work 50 hours a week, but the money is BANK compared to what I'm making right now. So what I'm asking is what you FFRer's out there think I should do?
Help?

Re: Help?
Not so much looking for decisions, just opinions. What would you do if you were in my shoes?Originally posted by SynthlightEveryone uses quotes from Synthlight in their signature. So I'm making this one up to fit in.

Re: Help?
I'd say stick with college. There is always a chance you can take the job after you finish. I'd suggest talking to your manager and explaning the situation. Tell him/her that you are really interested in the promotion however there is no way you can take it right now. Maybe they will be willing to offer you the same promotion once you are out of college.
I had kind of the same problem when i was in college and working for Subway. They wanted me to become assistant manager, but that would have taken up too much time for me to finish off college (i only had a year left at that point). Once i explaned this, they told me that the offer was left open for when i graduated.
I left the country as soon as i graduated but hey it was nice that they left options open for me

Re: Help?
Yeah, I'm still undecided. I'm kind of leaning toward taking it for a couple years and then finishing school. I think it might be helpful if I have that experience behind me when I'm looking for an internship at a place like 3M or Best Buy. Still not sure though...Originally posted by SynthlightEveryone uses quotes from Synthlight in their signature. So I'm making this one up to fit in.

Re: Help?
The question I would ask, as it has more bearing to me if I were to look at the resulting resume .. is that field what you WANT to be in?
I mean sure, a piece of paper is great, but if you hate the field you end up in, then what good is it? You would be leaving soon anyway.
So really, the decision is more about what do you WANT to do if that paper was in your hands right now. If you see yourself doing that job 5 years from now even with that paper .. cool. If not .. stick with school, as the beauty of life in the US is, there will always be other jobs that will match that salary or exceed it. Don't feel like this is a great offer you will never see again.Comment

Re: Help?
I'd say 30k is enough to live on for a single person. At 41k, you'd be comfortably affording a good living for yourself, at an early age too.
But if your college is top rated, I'd go for that, because you'd probably get a higher paying job with a degree from there.FFR.

Re: Help?
in the short term, although the money may be bank, you have to think about what you could potentially do IF you finished school
with that degree, would you be able to get into a higher paying job? I think you probably could. 41K is a lot, but there is a lot higher you could go.
It really depends on whether or not you like the job. If you're only doing it because of the big bucks, then I would say no (for now at least)Comment
