    Regarding: New posters

Take it easy on them. It IS possible to initiate someone into how the internet at large behaves without being a total jackass.

FFR by it's nature attracts lots of people that are young. We're talking barely teens. If any of you guys can remember, those weren't exactly easy years. They weren't for the vast majority of people I know, and they weren't for me.

I recall that my first post, ever, on the entirety of the internet, was one of self-despair. I know I'm not the only one. I was just lucky enough that there was someone more or less like I am now, that said "This is a really bad place to post of drama in your life." How was I to know? I was just a kid. The internet was a vast, enormous culture I didn't understand at the time. I had genuine problems about being socially accepted, and had the thread I started not been locked by a moderator that understood how to handle the situation, it would have just made things worse.

I'm a big proponent for being nice to other people. I never understood the general spirit of mean-ness inherent in junior high and high school aged kids, especially back when I had to deal with it because I was that age myself. I just wish people would at the very least be respectful of the person on the other end of the computer, just as I'd hope they'd initially be respectful to anyone they met in person.

I guess this is another post from yours truly heavily influenced by another thread. The poor girl is just thirteen. I'm not sure how belittling her is going to help anyone. What sense of satisfaction is there in making someone you don't know feel worse about themselves? I wish someone could explain it to me because I find the concept alien.

I don't pick on them outside the Garbage Bin.

Unless they act retarded beyond the bounds of being new and go into the generally stupid in any situation, even beyond the internets, mode.

Just ignore it, and let the topic be locked. There's no need to be an ass. You don't need to make a post everytime someone posts something that makes you irritated.
The secret to your future lies hidden in your daily routine.

The reason most people fail instead of succeed is that they trade what they want most for what they want at the moment.

Being new is not an excuse to be an idiot.

If a new user is at least making an attempt to not be an utter moron, then I am more than happy to assist them. If they don't think they have to change, then frankly, I don't care to assist them.

If new users want to fit in, it is perfectly in their power to. If they give up, then they retire to MP or Video Chat where they spend the rest of their FFR days in happiness.

(Well, to be truthful, I keep this attitude to TGB. Anywhere else I just make a witty joke and point out the mistake.)

Public scrutiny is usually the only way to do it because almost every new user who seems to just attract the regulars' criticism decides to DISABLE PERSONAL MESSAGES.

We can't PM them to tell them how to correct their ways and if they don't re-visit their old threads and continue to spam, what do you think is going to happen?

They'll continue with their spamming, idiocy, and elitism until they get banned.

It's a perfectly reasonable generalization and almost the end result.

See Laharl? There are circumstances at play here. WE TRY to get through to them, but they ignore us. Chrissi posed an example to us before about a forum she used to moderate where moderators were looked down upon, insulted, and ignored. If they think they can go YA RITE LIEK IM GANA LISTN 2 U LOL then they're sadly mistaken and they need to be taught a lesson.

I've week-banned my share of idiots who had these ideals. They never come back.

Actually, ever since the site switch to vb, whenever a user signs up, it not only automatically assumes they're under 13, but it also starts them off with PMs disabled.

Additionally, I posted this recently, and I feel it is 100% relevent:

Our primary function of making fun of users here may be to create humor, but there is also the secondary, latent function. In making fun of a user for a mistake or weakness, we are encouraging the user to not show that weakness or not make that mistake ever again. It's the basic principle of negative reinforcement.

In the end, the user who had been made fun is stronger because of it. They learn to avoid mistakes such as grammatical and spelling errors, and they learn to not reveal personal elements of themselves that others may find questionable (such as a person being a furry, emo, or gay).

EDIT: I apologize for being totally serious here [was originally posted in the Garbage Bin] , but given the situation, I'd say it's more than warranted. I'll leave the negative reinforcement to everyone else

So say "It's not a good idea to start a thread about wanting to commit suicide, on an internet message board" in a post in the thread itself. Explain why if you want.

I don't think being a prick to people that don't understand that seeking attention on the internet will simply serve to reinforce negative thoughts about one's self is really going to help them.

This isn't a forum where everyone's extremely nice--and we like it that way. If it WAS that way, a lot of the people and regulars who post here wouldn't post here. Thanks for your opinion, but I don't think anyone's going to change.

Name a better approach that won't justify their actions.

I watched clouds awobbly from the floor o' that kayak. Souls cross ages like clouds cross skies, an' tho' a cloud's shape nor hue nor size don't stay the same, it's still a cloud an' so is a soul. Who can say where the cloud's blowed from or who the soul'll be 'morrow? Only Sonmi the east an' the west an' the compass an' the atlas, yay, only the atlas o' clouds.

I'll bring it up with LD.

We've discussed the PM situation before and he said it would be difficult to fix but he'd try.
