It's better to take a passive standpoint on these things.

Trust me. I've been fighting widespread usage of shorthand text for years. All it has done for me is given me the title "Grammar Nazi" and small forum of people who might think twice about posting 'their' or 'they're' in posts.

The problem with 'lol' is that people are using it way too much just to end sentences because they've forgotten how to do it normally.

Or they just don't know how to reply to something so it's just instantly funny even though they didn't even laugh.

I say "haha" or "heh", you know, what you say when you actually laugh.

People also use lol to postwhore or just add to useless threads. What can't be easier than putting three letters in a post?
