Re: Antivirus
ad-aware doesn't locate viruses, as I understand.
Go to download.com and get avg the free version, as I'm pretty sure has been mentioned in all of the virus threads that have popped up recently.Comment

Re: Antivirus
If you currently have a virus or Trojan or some crap like that, download HijackThis and go on another forum that's big on support. HJT along with other basic tools like Killbox and someone who knows wtf they're doing is the best way to get rid of anything. Even if you know a little you can do a lot with HJT. I helped stopped pop-ups on both of my friend's computers with his logs (although, one of his computers is still running slow, so that one isn't fully disinfected. I also doubt the other one is fully disinfected too, there are just no visible problems). This is true and all, but HJT is NOT by any means a program to use without any sort of skill. Using it without much knowledge can result in things not working right with your computer.
And a very short tutorial on the basics of HJT just so you know exactly how much you shouldn't mess around with this thing:
HijackThis is a utility that produces a listing of certain settings found in your computer. HijackThis will scan your registry and various other files for entries that are similar to what a Spyware or Hijacker program would leave behind. Interpreting these results can be tricky as there are many legitimate programs that are installed in your operating system in a similar manner that Hijackers get installed. Therefore you must use extreme caution when having HijackThis fix any problems. I can not stress how important it is to follow the above warning.
For general antivirus use, NOD32 is great. Norton is also alright as long as you keep it up to date. The best free antivirus program is the AVG free version. Use it if you're cheap like me.Comment

I got this because McAfee wouldn't fcking update. I didn't like McAfee anyway.Originally posted by TheRapingDragonWindows Defender Beta 2. Previously Microsoft Antispyware Beta 1.

I like it. I used to have MS antispyware before I got mcafee and that was really good. You could always get xoftspy too which I've heard is insanely good, but it costs money (or does it?*cough* bitorrent).Comment

In all seriousness, though, AVG tends to work well, especially for a free program.
