What's the deal with Passover anyway? Is it like Chanukah's relation to Christmas (in this case, it'd be a relation to Easter)?

      Re: Happy Passover!

No, there is no relation between the two holidays.

Passover is about how the Jewish slaves escaped from Egypt during the time when Pharaoh Ramses II ruled.

Why Matzoh? Because the Jews didn't have time to wait for the flower to bake all the way to make bread. (Btw to make matzoh it only takes 18 sec)

And Easter is about the rebirth of.. Earth?

So it's just a coincidence then? Why don't Christians celebrate it too? It's definitely part of their heritage as well.

              You traitor.

I actually didn't eat any matzoh yet. If you eat it plain it tastes horrible... so put some chocolate spread on it. Make sure it's kosher for passover rofl.

It's not a coincidence. I'm pretty sure Jesus timed his death & rebirth so that it would fall close to Passover, so that his (other) Chosen People would have something to celebrate while the Jews were bitching about having to eat matzah.

Seriously though, I think it's as coincidental as you're going to get. The Hebrew calendar doesn't follow the Gregorian, so Passover is on a slightly different week each year, and doesn't always coincide with Easter. Same with Chanukah--we don't always (or even often) get it starting right on Christmas.

And no--it's definitely not part of the Christian heritage. I didn't see any Christians being enslaved in Egypt...possibly because there was no Christianity around yet. It's a completely Jewish thing, and has nothing to do with Jesus, the messiah, or Christians in any way, shape, or form.

They don't actually know when Jesus died... nobody does. It's just celebrated at this time of the year to combat other religious holidays... it's sort of a thing organized religion has; just look at December.

Are you kidding me? Are you serious??

No one who has any knowledge of religion and the background of the 3 major religions really thinks that Jesus was born on Christmas and died right before Easter. Of course no one knows exactly when he was born or died. There is no written evidence of the exact date.

But it's not "celebrated at this time of year to combat other religious holidays" because holidays are not a WAR. Chanukah is celebrated at that time in December because that is when the Jewish calendar coincides with the Gregorian one. And we have the date for Chanukah because we actually do have written evidence of the precise date (the 25th of Kislev through the 2 of Tevet, which last year just happened to coincide with the 25th of December). We have the same kind of evidence for Passover, the 15-21 of Nisan, which this year coincided with the 12th-19th of April (add a day outside of Israel to combat the time change). See? Only a coincidence that Easter Sunday is the 16th of April, which is within that week.

And now I think I'll back away from the angry religious arguments and get back to the fact that I really really want matziot (matzah fried in egg like French Toast and covered in sugar) and I don't have matzah and it's 1:20 am and I don't want to go buy any even if the store is open 24/7.

To the Jews: Congrats on your first born child not getting killed by ghosts and then wandering around in the desert for 40 years or whatever.

To the Gentiles: Congrats on your God rising from the dead to find hidden eggs.
