    Not 87x, but help anyway.

Preface: We should totally have a new forum section for this =o

    K so liek.

This problem happened before but it went away. Basically what happens is that XP starts up like normal and then completely restarts after it gets to the Welcome screen. I see a cursor for about 3 seconds then it goes out. Not a "soft" restart either. It's like pressing the reset button on the case... if I had one.

I've googled the problem and come up empty. People with similar problems couldn't boot into safemode and I could. Unchecking "restart on failure" or whatever didn't work as it was already unchecked. I removed all programs that I thought might cause the problem on startup and allowed Windows to dump its savefile and start anew on restart.

I WOULD do an XP recovery except that I put in the CD and let it do its thing and hit R to recover and it tells me "You don't have a hard drive." Yay.

Last time I tried a recovery and failed, I was forced to restart and it got through. I tried again and again like this and still haven't gotten in since then. Safe mode still works at least. Last known working configuration does not.

ONCE I actually saw an error message I think. I never get BSODed or see any kind of dump of an error message. Nothing was recently installed (Except Oblivion, but I highly doubt a game causes this. It's not even in my startup programs). My startup programs are just ctfmon, peerguardian, MSAntiSpyware, and ZoneAlarm. None of them had recent errors associated with them.

I'm at work now and won't be home for another few hours, so I can't try anything you suggest. Just post away and I'll go through them all when I get home. I'll see if I can reply along the way.

    Ouch. That sounds nasty.

Unfortunately, I cannot be of help because my suggestion is to always F-DISK the thing to hell.

Transfer your harddrive to another computer, back up all your files and "boot and nuke."

There might be a better way though.

I'm gonna try partitioning but I don't think it'll work...

        I'll see what I can do =/

PS I did run antivirus and antispyware.

Edit: Ok, so I got in. I don't know how. Right now, the keyboard decided to not work and I am scared of having to restart to make it work again.

Anime Sunday is practically ruined =/

Edit 2: Typing this one from the laptop. It's pretty badly owned at this point. Here's all the problems!

        1) Windows recovery DOES NOT WORK with SATA! Lovely.
        2) I don't have a floppy drive. Saved $20 when I bought the computer. Smart eh.

So now I'm trying to slipstream in. I'll tell you how it goes.

I totally would if I could get into my Operating System and tell it to do that.

instead of a recovery, could you do a system rollback to a few days before? or is that the same thing as the last known working configuration?
my computer gets messed up all the time by mom and brother and usually a rollback fixes everything ( but it kills the computer :[ )

You know what I did when I the hard disk was missing on a school computer? I unplugged the computer, pressed the on switch, plugged it back in, and turned it on. For some reason, it worked. And I did try everything else. Odd. Try it, it seems crazy, but it might work.

Try disconnecting various hardware, sometimes a glitch in the hardware can cause a system not to work.

Ok, slight progress. I got a floppy drive. I thought my motherboard didn't have a port for it but it seems I was wrong. So I acquisitioned a floppy from the other computer.

The drivers that came with the computer aren't being recognized though. So I'm working on getting more drivers now ...

                    ~Squeek

Edit: IN. Freaking YES. Now that I am in I'm not restarting it until I consult my friend and make sure this never happens again.

The steps I had to take to do this.... Ugh.

                    1) Change BIOS settings to allow Windows to notice my drives in the Recovery Console.
                    2) Update the Drivers with a Floppy drive that is hanging out the back of the computer right now.
                    3) Delete the Boot.ini and recreate it in DOS.
                    4) Change the BIOS BACK to making Windows work (BSOD'd without it -.-)
                    5) Yay.

Thanks for all the help. Glad it wasn't anything too complicated... Just gotta clean up the mess I made.
