Overnight fire kills 24 horses at Upper Freehold farm

(03/24/06) UPPER FREEHOLD – An overnight fire burned stables and killed two dozen horses at an Upper Freehold horse farm Friday.

Police say an electrical problem is to blame for the fire at Perretti Farms. According to investigators, electricity from heaters used to prevent water in troughs from freezing ignited the flames at approximately 1 a.m. Twelve mares and 12 foals died of smoke inhalation.

Perretti Farms is a facility that breeds and races horses. Representatives of the farm say they are emotionally devastated by the loss of their horses.

Yeah they have over a hundred horses there. All of the ones that died were mares (female) and the foals (babies).

That sucks... Those people trained those horses from birth and then they just die in a random accident... Hopefully, not a lot was lost from the deaths... =(

Well they foal the mares, send them out to race, and then take them back in...so they are pretty attached to them. Of course, the foals are babies so it's horrible to lose them when they hardly lived.
