    Computer Trouble

    Man, I have no idea what I was thinking, but I decided to reformat my computer tonight. And by reformat, I mean totally erase everything on my harddrive and do a clean install of Windows XP pro. The bios on my motherboard is not compatible with my Samsung harddrive so I ran Disk Manager and whatever. Then I loaded up the XP installation CD.

    I went through the entire process but upon rebooting, where the GUI should kick in, nothing happens. I know little to nothing about computers, but I definately dont remember XP being such a bitch to install the first time through. So, any ideas as to what might be the problem? Should I set the CMOS to load the HDD First? Should I stick with loading the CDROM first? Perhaps it is a problem with my XP CD? I mean, I didnt exactly buy it and it isnt the same CD I used the first time I installed XP onto my computer.

    So, any clues as to what to do would be apperciated.

    Man, I feel like 87x.

    ps. I booted my system with Knoppix 3.6 and I was really suprised at how smooth and fast everything ran. I have an external harddrive with all my documents, movies and mp3s. I picked some random videos to run (which I had to install countless codecs and programs to run on windows) and they booted right up. I was really impressed. If this whole Windows thing doesnt work out, I'll probably switch over to Linux.

    I was going to suggest reformat you computer, regardless of what the problem was, but... yeah.

    Should I set the CMOS to load the HDD First?
    Yeah, do that.

      Get a Windows XP boot disk, boot from the A:/ drive, and go from there. You'll be able to find a copy of a boot disk easily if you search on google. Usually, the boot disk will give you the option to boot from your CD then to install Windows. Let me know how that works, or if you're still having trouble using the boot disk.

        That's actually what I did the first time I installed XP because I kind of had no idea what I was doing, and I still don't. And that's what I tried doing last night before I gave up and went to bed. I got through the first 5 disks, and then the installed messed up on the 6th...probably because the disk I was using was old? Anyways, I am going to give it another try tonight when I get home from work if my friend's copy of XP doesnt work.

          Use the boot disk go to dos they type c: then enter then format C/s
          That should completely erase everything and then install xp. But you will have to set the A drive in cmos to boot first.

            Re: Computer Trouble

            I found the boot disk installation that may work for you:

            Windows XP Pro Boot Disk

            It shows up as an executable, but it's probably a form of .iso files for floppy disks (I don't know, I'm too lazy to try it). The image will have to be written to multiple disks, and should allow you to use the CD drive to install Windows XP Professional. I don't know how the XP boot disk works (I've only worked with 98 since I've never had to do a clean wipe of XP), but it shouldn't be too hard to figure it out. Let me know if you hit any more road blocks, and I'll see what I can do.

            Oh, one thing to remember: MAKE SURE THE FLOPPIES ARE CLEAN AND FORMATTED BEFORE USING THEM AS BOOT DISKS. Any info on them can cause the image to become corrupted, which may have been the issue with your original set of disks.

              What's with all this talk of floppy disks?

              Just get a bootable disk of XP and set it to boot from CD first.

              Also, 6 disks? Windows easily fits on one...

                  That's what I have been doing. And it hasnt been working, so, you know, I thought I'd try something new...something that worked before.

                  One loppy disk? Which version of windows are you talking about?

                  Also, Grandiagod, I dont have DOS on my system anymore. I nuked my HDD. Nuri let me borrow a (legit) copy of XP, so I am going to see if that works when I get home.

                      For future reference:

                      disk = Floppy
                      disc = CD.

                      It's just how it turned out I guess...
