I think this is going to be the first productive post I have made in a long time. So listen up kids, because the next 10 minutes of your life is actually going to be worth something.
I recently recieved and 5g Ipod(Video) for christmas and being myself the first thing I did was put my entire library on it, Just about 1700 Songs. After that I wanted videos and found out that not all videos can go on there. So I found numerous programs To convert any video files into compatible 320x240 mpg4. First problem solved. The next 10 hours of owning this thing was for novelty purposes. After that, I wanted to mod it.
No Im not talking about removing the screen and adding a blue or red or green LED to change the screen color. Im talking about going inside the ipod and Changing all of the pictures and Icons.
I found a couple of Guides to help me on my way, but it just seemed that none of them were complete. So Im going to make up my own guide right now.
Things Needed:
Ipod (Any version)
Connector to computer
Latest Ipod updating Software (http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/)
Ipod Wizard (http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...roup_id=153441)
Image Editing Program (Most of you have Photoshop, but I found that for some of the smaller images Ms Paint was the better choice)
What Your Actually Doing:
What your going to be doing is making the ipod updating software think your ipod firmware isn't up-to-date. So you can use it to Updae your firmware. Now you aren't updating with original firmware, this is where the modding comes in. Your going to be using Ipod Wizard to open updating Software and editing what pictures are inside. So when you actually "update" your ipod your putting the customized pictures on there, without haveing to delete everything off the ipod.
The Process:
1)Download all programs listed above. (Ipod Updater & Ipod Wizard)
2)Extract The updater & Install Ipod Wizard
3)Open Up Ipod Wizard ; Click Open Updater ; Locate the Updater you just extracted ; Select which Ipod you have from the drop down menu ; Hit load
4)SAVE ALL ; This is just in case you mess something up, you can restore your old pictures.
5)Edit all the pictures you want. Make sure you name the edited pictures with the same name as the original picture. Click "Load Bitmap, seach for file and click ok.
6)When you are done with all the editing, Click "Write". This will update the upgrader.
7)Click "Downgrade Firmware". If it gives a message saying cany find ipod, just disconnect it from the computer and reconnect it. Give it a minute, hit "Refresh Status" and try again.
8)Open the Updater and the icon that says "Update" should be available to click. If it isn't, try downgarding the firmware again.
Give your Ipod about 2-4 minutes to get through the loading process. When it comes on you should see your changes.
There are ways to change Font and other things, but I haven't even touched that yet.
I spent the better part of my night, 2am to 6am, doing this last night, editing just about all 300+ images for my ipod.
Hopefully I didn't miss anything and if you have any questions, I'd be happy to talk to anyone about this.
