I need some help with my internet.

I recently had a power outtage that shorted my 10/100 switch router. So, I am now running a direct connection from my RoadRunner 3.0 mbps cablebox/service to my home computer.

Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, my internet has greatly slowered.

My download speeds are constantly around 20kbs, though surfing is fast as normal. I have disabled and configured fire walls, assigned new IP's, and tried different and thicker ethernet cards to no avail.

I would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions I can get for this.

Man, I read the title of this thread as "I need help with my boyfriend." I figured it was some stupid thread with a author like "XxXGirl420PartyxXx." But then I realized it was by Tps, so I thought "teehee, ******."

Yeah, I got nothing...good luck with getting your internet not to suck.

Indeed, in fact, whenever I hit over 100 kb/s on a download, I go all happy and crap.

              Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

You've been here long enough to know the difference between a home network and the Internet.

You possess 0 Internets and therefore I cannot help you repair them.

The kids in my Comp Sci class keep saying, "THE INTERNET IS DOWN; I CAN'T ACCESS MY FILES". And they are serious.

Makes me laugh a little bit on the inside whenever I hear them gripe about it.

And no, sorry, I cannot help you with your problem.

Truth: Nobody likes it when people pick at them over mundane details such as this.

And as for helping with the internets, I can't. However, I would like to add a question. My internet connection here at NC State seems to vary a lot. Now, if I'm not mistaken, college campuses (especially ones specializing in ENGI-FREAKIN-NEERING) are supposed to have fast internets, but for some reason here it varies. Like, sometimes I'll get single digit pings in a FPS game online, but then Maplestory lags like hell (which it didn't do at home, where I got >100 ping sometimes). I figure it's just how they've got the firewalls set up, but does anybody know why exactly it's slower than home with some things and then way faster with other stuff?
So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O

All of you that just posted to say "I can't help you" fail.

First off, are you downloading from an FTP site or through P2P? Both can vary greatly in speed. Also, the storm might've somehow messed up your provider's optimal speeds for a while. Not sure exactly, but it's a possibility. Also, there may have been a lot of traffic if you were downloading an FTP site. Remember that there's a lot of processes that can slow down your connection and downloading speed as well, also including surfing.

Well if there are alot of eople in your area with the same cable ISP your connection can get slow. I would say get DSL. Or perhaps a download accelerator.

Yes, I know about the difference between internet and home network.

I didn't leave my comp on, I guess I forgot that the router isn't plugged into a surge protector.

It's any site, FTP, P2p, all are very slow. I am thinking about unplugging my cable modem for a while and seeing if it re-configures itself. Traffic is not really an issue. Thanks for the help anyways.
