An ad campaign from Sony in Italy has done just that, Reuters is reporting. Full-page ads celebrating the PlayStation's 10th anniversary recently ran in the country's newspapers and magazines. They featured a young man smiling sheepishly while wearing a crown of thorns. If that already sounds touchy, it gets worse.

The thorns are contorted into the X's, O's, triangles, and squares--the symbols on the faces of the PlayStation's four main buttons. A phrase at the bottom of the ad reads "Dieci anni di passione," which translates to "Ten years of passion," a possible reference to Mel Gibson's controversial Jesus biopic The Passion of the Christ.

I was just explaining their reasoning for making it in the first place. They obviously didn't think it would have such a response (why should it? It's not even Jesus in the photo) and when it did, they apologized so people wouldn't hate them.

Are you suggesting that someone who made that advertisement thought that people WOULDN'T think that was a reference to Jesus? With how many other things is a crown of thorns associated? It's obviously supposed to be a Biblical reference.

I really think they were expecting to take it down when they put it up because, face it, that wouldn't fly anywhere it would be shown, and I don't think anybody, let alone a collection of people, would be so dense to think otherwise.

just like when the guy from the beatles said they were bigger than jesus then the south burned all their beatles "parafanalia" and boycoted them. they just all bought the stuff again later.

My opinion: Why does it matter if it's a biblical reference? How is it offensive? And who is it offensive to most: atheists or christians or all the other people who aren't atheist or christian? Why isn't there a name for these heathen?
