Inner Metronome

I noticed that when I missed a step in Stepmania, my inner metronome became unbalanced. I was a 1/2 or a 1/4 of a beat off and failed the entire song! I KNOW people keep the beat in their head, but I missed over 12 steps in a row in a standard song! I was just wondering if this happens/ has happened to anyone else.
