You remember this post from 3 years ago? It drummed up a lot of attention on the internet, and even caused a blackout in protest for a couple of days.

Here we go again. Legislation is quietly being passed around for a bill similar to the likes of SOPA/PIPA. I wonder what's going to happen this time around...

Well, a couple hours ago, it just passed the Senate, in all its glory, without any ratifying changes to the bill, regardless of the support was given to stop it. It was re-named to CISA, but contains about 80-90% of what CISPA originally had.

Welcome to hell. Practically your only hope now is that President Obama veto's it, or some other miracle happens. I'm not too well versed on American Politics, so I haven't a clue what 'other miracles' could count for.

Now we're gonna have to paytoplay their game.
This is seriously depressing, at least if you do remember the controversy.
Plus I think we can all agree the government has it's fingers in too much already.

Correct me if I'm wrong with American Politics, but it has to be sent to a conference committee for last minute changes/adjustments, as well as writing it out, and from there, it gets sent to the President's desk, where he can choose to veto it, or sign it.

Not sure what type of underlying power of authority in the law system this 'conference committee' sits at, but if it can be sent back to senate that would be great but I highly doubt it. Many news sources are saying that the last chance of anything happening to it, is whether or not the president you elected will sign it or not.

I believe it still has to pass the House before it gets sent to the President, but that's not a great hope either.

It hurts just as much to move to Canada because if information passes into the United States for any reason, the government can collect it in the same fashion, and the information on the internet has to travel in that direction a lot because of powerhouses like google (youtube, unless getting it from their offices in Toronto/Kitchener, but the closest data centre is in USA), amazon (twitch), facebook, reddit, and imgur.

Bill still needs to pass in the House (assuming it hasn't already), then a conference committee irons out any differences between the bills accepted, as a bill has to pass identically in both houses. Any idea what the vote was (for and against numbers)? If president vetoes it then the bill needs 2/3 of the house and 2/3 of senate to vote for it.

four of those abstainers were preparing for a presidential debate but had firmly anti-CISA stances beforehand

even so that's nearly 75% voting for, it looks pretty bad. too bad the majority of the people in the senate don't actually represent their people's interests

What about the HoR? If it's like the senate then it won't even matter if Obama vetoes it. The senate already has 2/3 majority

The House hasn't voted for the current version of the bill, but the previous two versions both passed in the House (and they were the ones who reintroduced a similar version of this one) so it likely will pass there also.

Though this was kinda expected since the far right has majority control in both the Senate and the House for the time being.

Don't worry boys, Donald Trump 2016 will repeal this unjust law!

This is the classic privacy vs. protection trade off. Looks like protection is winning.

except it won't increase protection that much but it will take away 99%+ of privacy
