I know that many music game enthusiasts would also like to take up an instrument, but find it hard to find the discipline to practice regularly. A program that turns piano study into something resembling a music game is now being developed under the name 'The Augmented Piano'. Something to look forward to!

Re: The Augmented Piano
So it's synthesia projected onto a grand piano? Well we have a stand-up one, so I don't know if it'll work. The cats'll have lots of fun with it though.Comment

Re: The Augmented Piano
Nope, synthesia works on a computer keyboard, augmented piano works on a piano. The whole point is that you get to play an instrument and have that rhythm game feeling at the same time. Of course, this should just help with motivating you; it's not to be substituted for traditional methods to learn to play the piano.
I have a 7000 euro piano at home. A good instrument certainly motivates to play more. I started out with a cheap keyboard, then went to a second-hand study piano and then bought the 7000 euro piano. Don't invest in something like that until you have reached a certain level and are relatively certain you'll be playing for a long time to come. (Sadly, since I'm doing my PhD abroad, I have to make do with a digital piano, which, even though it's not a bad one, can never live up to the real thing)Last edited by Callipygian; 03-5-2014, 03:19 AM.Sick natureComment

Re: The Augmented Piano
Eh? Synthesia is actually for real pianos, it just happens to also support computer keyboard input for the insane people who feel like playing it without a piano or something. I've tried exactly this before by just hooking up Synthesia and placing the monitor flat in front of the piano. The projector idea is kinda cool, much less awkward than trying to keep a TV in place.Nope, synthesia works on a computer keyboard, augmented piano works on a piano. It's kinda neat, but it's still just synthesia with a projector. I didn't find it any more intuitive than playing synthesia normally on a vertical screen when I tried that.

Re: The Augmented Piano
Damn, you're right. I only knew it from videos of people trying it with computer keyboards. In that case, the idea is indeed not very innovative, although it would make the synthesia idea more easily available to those without a digital piano. Oh well, she got away with it and won a cash prize; good for her :PEh? Re: The Augmented Piano
Mm, Synthesia is actually meant to be a piano learning tool. This thing works the same way, also only with a digital/MIDI-capable piano. It's quite literally Synthesia with a projector, nothing else added (though it looks like they rewrote Synthesia and styled it to look exactly the same without actually using it?). Also doesn't look like the first time it's been done?Damn, you're right. I only knew it from videos of people trying it with computer keyboards. Also someone give me an oculus rift with cameras on it so I can do this in fancy AR instead :P
