Of note: on things like forum posts and Skype I always turn off emoticons because I hate it when they get "translated" to those pictures.

For this reason I went years wondering what the hell (y) was supposed to mean. I thought it was a woman crossing her legs and thought that pretty inappropriate for the work conversations in which I saw it.

I don't use them all the time, but I do just to not seem overly serious or sarcastic with certain stuff sometimes. Mainly when I talk with friends here, or on Skype I use them. I don't mind if other people use them, as long as there isn't an emoticon with everything they say then it gets kinda annoying sometimes.

I tend to use them a bit but I try to not overuse them. (Most forums dislikes this anyway and it can become annoying after a while...) Anyway, my favorite is Izzy's hated one.

but yeah I generally prefer Ascii/Unicode emoticons because they convey emotion better/more creatively.

Simple happiness I've started to express with tildes, lots and lots of tildes~

The only emotes I've used in the past few days are -^^- and ><;; Other ones I use are :< , x: , and sometimes >>;

I don't know why, but I use x: at the end of something I feel guilty for saying or having done. The facial expression itself is more like :[, spreading the lips in a slight frown. ( ... And I type it "colon x", but that makes an angry face on here.)

There's one emoticon that always makes my heart drop whenever someone uses it to me, and that's =/ , because I read it as "I'm disappointed in you." Even if that's not what they mean, it's just a past experience association thing that I can't help.

One of my friends uses o.o after almost everything he says, and I have to tell him to stop staring at me.

dAnceguy inspired me to turn emoticons back on in Skype. I had them off because I don't like the heart image, but now I use at least <33 instead of a single heart.

Haha, (y) does look like crossed legs. Hadn't seen it like that before. Oh, yeah, any kind of text representation of adult stuff I think is pretty tasteless. Don't like that. Can't think of emoticon things I've misinterpreted, but I remember the first time I saw "Lol" I thought it was a camera.

I miss custom emotes from MSN messenger. There was like this set of cute fluffy dragon ones. People could upload their own and copy them from their friends ... Fun stuff. (Was lame that just the default emotes couldn't be turned off.)

So, like people getting annoyed by others overusing emotes, some would probably be irritated by my overuse of typed-out laughter and tic-like noises, 'cause I just type it out as it comes into my head, haha, rawrrawrf, welp, mmmmeow and stuff and rawr, ehehe~

I like using emoticons. As others have said, it helps convey the tone of your message, just in case there's a risk of others enterpreting it as mean or too srs.

My dependence on them makes me anxious when it comes to sending work-related or other formal e-mails. Since I can't use emoticons, I re-read the message like 2 million times before I send it to make sure 100% that I'm not coming off like an asshole or something.
