    Steam Machine

If last month’s round of next-gen console launches left you in a fog, prepare yourself for the incoming Steam Machine. Valve has released only 300...

So why exactly is this even a thing? The thing is going to cost as much as a high end PC because it is a high end PC just in a compact form factor. Which also means the longevity of the system is compromised because of bad airflow and overheating.

I assume there will be a steam OS to go along with it, but you could just install that onto a desktop as well. This also seems unlikely since the games are written for windows so steam OS would have to just use directX anyway and then get new drivers for nvidia cards.

      Re: Steam Machine

They seem to be marketed at people who enjoy playing console games but want to switch to PC gaming. It's basically a console/PC hybrid. Steam OS is nothing more than a more advanced version of Steam's Big Picture mode. There's also going to be different models that will be different prices all of which are fully upgradable/moddable. It's a pretty neat idea I think.

For the record, the $1300 model is one of their top models I believe.

Found what I was looking for:

The 300 prototype units will ship with the following components:
GPU: some units with NVidia Titan, some GTX780, some GTX760, and some GTX660
CPU: some boxes with Intel i7-4770, some i5-4570, and some i3
      RAM: 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU), 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)
      Storage: 1TB/8GB Hybrid SSHD

Also Alpha, $1300 is the price if you were to take all the included parts in the model that was shown in the article and build your own computer. The Steam Machines don't actually have prices yet.

I guess it isn't any different than the market dell tries to sell to with alienware computers. Could make some money from people wanting high end PC's that they aren't willing to assemble themselves.

I just couldn't believe it when I saw a gtx 780 come out of that thing. I bought a 770 for my PC and that already goes for 350-400 depending on the version. A 780 by itself is $600 so that could be 75-80% of the cost for the system right there. I'm proud of them for using an i5 instead of an i7 though since gaming doesn't utilize hyperthreading. Alienware computers would probably just throw in an i7 and than totally jack up the price for the system despite not giving any additional performance.

That's basically what it comes down to along with trying to reel in more console gamers.

I'm all for it, if it doesn't flop it just means good things for Linux and OpenGL gaming moving forward.

My hope with all this is that big companies like nvidia and amd start collaborating with Ubuntu and debian to have "EASY TO INSTALL" drivers for all graphics cards on Linux so that we can all finally throw windows to the garbage and use free alternatives.
