i forgot to respond to the op because i went off on a brainstorming tangent about red5chat

* no one is doing anything on a Monday night

* it's way more memorable than skype conference calls

* i'm skeptical since it's a weekday and people have work or classes (the next day that is). i mean, it could work, i'm not really sure, but it's just something to think about compared to a weekend.

* along the same lines as what snowc said, skype conference calls can be a lot of fun if you round up enough the right people and enough of them. they definitely suffer from the lack of accessibility though. people have to download skype, give their usernames out and actually join a call. vidchat is kinda just drop-by-whenever.

anyway, red5chat as a viable solution entirely depends on how easy it is to:
1) port to as3
2) customize to use appropriate graphics for its gui for ffr
3) extend it to use home rolled functionality later on (i.e. integration with ffr engines etc.)

While I like these ideas and integrating this into FFR would be a great thing eventually, I don't feel like this sort of stuff should be a major concern right now. We're using a low quality temporary solution at the moment, so if this one is even slightly better why not try to use it? It may still be temporary but it's an upgrade nonetheless..

Sure, as long as it can easily fit a ton of webcam windows on the screen at once. The "we're all webcamming together" aspect of vidchat is what makes large vidchats so endearing.

vidchat isn't cool if 15 people are all in there at once talking at the same time.

It's just not something that works. FFR's old vidchat was the way to go.

And tinychat can't run more than 12 cams at once... so red5 might be better in that respect...

people don't always just talk over everyone nonstop... it's like a skype call... it works fine.
