                Re: Rap discussion thread

been listening to this on repeat

on a side note, I finally found a way to articulate what I don't like about Aesop Rock:

his diction and rhyme structure are really good, but he has very little synergy between the beats and his lyrics most of the time unless it's a collab on someone else's album. the beats and his lyrics are essentially independent of each other, or there might as well not even be a beat.

it strikes me as the equivalent of comedy where the only thing happening is the comedian standing at the microphone telling jokes in a monotone voice, a la Mitch Hedberg or Anthony Jeselnik. and even in that case, the monotone voice usually adds to the comedy; in rap, where the voice lends to the energy of the track, it bugs me when rappers don't emphasize tone and delivery -- the major difference between Eminem and Jay-Z, from my perspective.

I think few people articulate this because wordplay is explicit, and it's a level of complexity easier to express in terms of a system, which when taken to a great extent will hit the listener over the head with its complexity, forcing an "I like it / I don't like it" choice. it's not like tone and delivery, which are readily understandable on visceral terms. good delivery is more akin to good graphic design; it works with a gut response in the listener/viewer, and is difficult to analyze in overt terms.

i originally thought wolf was album of the year for the first 3 weeks it was out and then i couldn't listen to it as much just because tyler's lyrics (again) were not as good as his production. though i thought the album was super cohesive and is holistically great progress for him

yeah but doris will be album of the year no doubt -- not much competition with kanye's garbage and jay-z's mediocre stuff. mac miller did well with his new album and j cole stuck to his roots

                        lil b is untouchable.

The Cool Kids don't make my favorite rap music. I wouldn't try to make an argument for them being "the greatest of all time" or whatever. I doubt they have anything like that in mind, though, which is pretty dope.
