    Photography Thread!

Hey all! The reason I started this thread is because I've started getting into Communication Technology courses at my school. Photography is quite interesting to me and I just love going out and taking hundreds of photos of anything and everything.

Whether anyone else here shares the same interest as me is to be determined, and whether anyone sees legitimacy in this thread also remains an unknown, it could bring some great things!

My idea was to get photos that show many important aspects of photography:
    1. Short depth of field photos (potentially with a macro lens or telephoto macro)
    2. Long depth of field (I'm looking for some ideas with long depth of field because macro photography appeals to me far more).
    3. Gallery shots (follows the rules of composition effectively; rule of thirds, exposure, shutter speed/aperture value).
    4. High contrast/low contrast (photograph exhibits a certain mood)

But those are just a few ideas!

This thread can also serve as a guideline for people (such as my self) aspiring to make photography an important part of their life, either a simple hobby or a "full blown" [haha exposure pun] career. Photographers can come into this thread and see good examples of photos and bad examples, etc. You can also come here for advice (I'm glad to give some based on what I know in order to help someone compose a more effective photograph). Some of my photos are modified in photoshop (adding contrast etc.), so if using photoshop on your shots is something you like to do, you can come here to see what's going on!

Most photographs will be accepted (photos from a point and shoot camera such as the Powershot G5, A low end DSLR such as the Canon T4i or T1i, and even into the mid range and high range DSLR's such as the Canon 50/60D and the 7D, 5D and 1D!). Anything that has the potential to be viewed as a good photo can come onto here (webcam photos and phone photos are probably not the best), but you get the point.

My photos are all taken with the Canon 60D, 7D and 5D, shooting in RAW mode. Happy shooting!

One of my first gallery shots.
Taken with tungsten white balance to emphasize the color of the blues. High ISO and mid-range shutter speed to increase sensitivity of light without blowing out the photo. Taken in time value mode - manual focus with a Sigma 150mm Telephoto Macro.

    EDIT: Photoshopped to make the proportions 8 1/2" x 11" for printing; in RGB color/Canvas Size 8 1/2" x 11" - 350 PPI.

      Re: Photography Thread!

I took a Digital Photography class a couple years back (before I changed my major). It was one of the more enjoyable classes I'd taken, and taught me a lot about photography. I really enjoyed going out and taking pictures for the class, I just haven't really gone out a lot since then.

Here are a few of my favorites that I took for the class.

And since I have this $500 camera sitting around, sometimes my friends ask me to get some shots of their cars lol.

This is a placeholder for upcoming photos.

Most of my shots will involve Nature, Astronomy, Airshows, or special events.

I'll begin with a view of my city en route to work:

        1st in Kommisar's 2009 SM Tournament
        1st in I Love You`s 2009 New Year`s Tournament
        3rd in EnR's Mashfest '08 tournament
5th in Phynx's Unofficial FFR Tournament
9th in D3 of the 2008-2009 4th Official FFR Tournament
10th in D5 of the 2010 5th Official FFR Tournament
10th in D6 of the 2011-2012 6th Official FFR Tournament

        FMO AAA Count: 71
        FGO AAA Count: 10

Bluearrowll = The Canadian player who can not detect awkward patterns. If it's awkward for most people, it's normal for Terry. If the file is difficult but super straight forward, he has issues. If he's AAAing a FGO but then heard that his favorite Hockey team was losing by a point, Hockey > FFR
        PS: Cool AAA's Terry

I like the one with the zig zag shadows - partnered with the tilt of the photo and the strong leading lines, its composition is sound. The vertical alignment gives the photo a scale, it emphasizes the steps and makes the photo leaps and bounds more interesting than it would in a horizontal composition.

Second photo of the flower is amazing for two main reasons: The rule of thirds in the photo is followed very well; combined with the low contrast soil and sediment and the high contrast flower, it really draws me to that point naturally. Was this photo taken at sunset/late afternoon? It seems quite dark, it portrays a lonely feeling. The underexposure in this photo plays a strong compositional role. Well done

For the photo with all the vehicle lights: Did you shoot using just shutter speed modifications, or did you use bald mode? I've tried using bald mode and the results are less desirable than when I just pick a shutter speed of 30. I love this picture a lot.

My favorite when coming to the cars, more so all your photos is the one where the lights seem to be a different color (the one with the two vehicles side by side). The shallow height proportions make for a strong horizontal photo. The best part of this is that putting the headlights right under the middle line of the rule of thirds gives it more scale. Paired with the body of the cars matching the vertical lines makes this my favorite of the photos you've posted. Thanks for contributing

I like how you've put the CN tower in the edge of the landscape shot. Again, rule of thirds appears to be well executed in this photo. Leading lines also show some work to drawing to the focal point. I see the foliage and canopies of the trees (providing they are all green, it provides a low contrast image), which naturally draws me to the trees farther away and eventually the skyline hits you with more interest than just looking at it without the trees. Taking into consideration that the trees take more of the space than the skyline there is a strong sense of scale. The photo would just be boring if you dissected it into two straight along the middle. Good eye and thanks for posting this lovely photo!

I'll throw in another one of my photos - I used photoshop for this one.

I would naturally add it as a spoiler - but the photos are too large and will really just consume the entire screen. I'll work on scaling further photos down to constrain to the forum proportions.

A friend of mine that's big on photography fell in love with this picture lol. He actually prefers it upside-down from how it's presented now. It's amazing what the alignment can do.

IIRC, it was mid afternoon on a cloudy day, or something lol. I used Photoshop to get it darker and increase the contrast.

I used a 30 second shutter speed. I tried the bulb setting, and it just wasn't doing it.

This was my favorite of my car shots too. The headlights actually are different colors too, the Volkswagon used to have green LED's a while back, but he removed them before I shot the one in the alleyway.

One thing I'd like to mention is that I don't have any extra equipment. No additional lenses, no tripods, no nothin' lol. These things would be nice at times, but going out and finding level surfaces to place my camera and get angles really added to the overall experience lol.
