    Re: Brushing your teeth

I think for Asians, it is common to brush teeth before breakfast (me included oop). Mostly just to freshen up for me; though I have the (?false) belief that the toothpaste kinda "protects" the teeth till an extent..

During daytime I tend to use toothpicks alot for the molars behind..

My teeth often hurt after I brush them so I don't brush them nearly as often as I should. I think it's a toothpaste thing more than a brushing thing though. I will often pick at my teeth with my fingernails instead of brushing because I don't get the pain then, but of course I miss more of my teeth then too. But that's probably why my gums are in good shape.
I tend to brush for bad breath reasons (usually won't leave the house without brushing) more than oral care reasons, which is also why I use toothpaste when I brush. I try to avoid brushing my teeth anywhere close to eating because that just makes them hurt more. I think not eating cheese the past couple of months is just making the sensitivity issue worse. I probably have terrible enamel.
I've got cavities of course. Most of them are inbetween my teeth which makes a lot of sense because I have large gaps between most of my teeth where food always gets caught. I just don't think about flossing as a regular thing so I don't do it everyday even though that doesn't hurt my teeth at all. At my last checkup (first one in 6 years) I was told to floss at least twice a week to make sure I don't get any cavities on the other side of my mouth (there're weak spots there), and also that I only need professional cleanings once a year not twice because my teeth were generally gunk free. Go fingernails.

Sweet, I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. That's pretty much the most disgusting thing I've ever read. Hope you enjoy your dentures.

I brush two to three times a day, and I floss as a nervous habit, so I think my bases are covered there. Gotta whiten my teeth a little bit because I've been drinking coffee, turnin em yellow

Before. I have horrible morning breath which ruins my food if I don't eradicate it before eating.

I don't think I know anyone who uses toothpicks, but that's probably a smart idea.

This is a question directly for Reach.

Now i've had a friend of mine who constantly brushes her teeth and takes care of them but ended up getting a "black tooth"? or something like that. I never ended up seeing it because I was her friend AFTEr she had the problem and now she has a fake tooth or something?
How does this happen? Is it completely random? Was she lying about taking care of her teeth?
If it makes a difference it was one of her front teeth.

Can't say for sure without seeing it, but most of the teeth I've seen with prominent black areas have one of two things wrong with them.

The less common cause is decay that started but ceased. It sometimes looks like a big black smear, usually between the teeth, and it gets glossy on top and is very hard. It doesn't need to be drilled out. You can just leave it there.

The more common cause, and by the sounds of it your friends problem, is rampant decay that has gone deep into the dentin and pulp and turned the tooth necrotic. This is caused by severe oral neglect. The tooth will need to either undergo a root canal + crown or be extracted and replaced with an implant.

So no, it's not completely random. In either scenario it's basically a cavity that either arrested or went wild.

One of my two front teeth is sort of grayish. The reason behind mine is actually because I chipped it pretty badly as a kid. The dentist thought it would have to be removed at first, but later on he decided it could stay. Just throwing that out there.

After, always after. Seems like undoing good work brushing them just to eat straight after.

I wouldn't brush if it weren't for that. Though because I didn't brush in the past is probably why I have it now, so that would be a bad idea.

When I wake up for school, I brush right away and don't eat breakfast.
Weekends I slack on morning brushing.
Logically you should brush after breakfast, though.
I take like 5 minutes every night in the shower brushing my teeth and I never neglect to brush my tongue, morning or evening.
Never floss and rarely use mouthwash. No cavities thus far. : )

I don't see any reason to brush right before a meal, but I do brush right when I wake up because otherwise my mouth tastes icky. I guess that counts as "before breakfast"? These days I rarely eat before lunch though.

I should probably be brushing after every meal as well as the normal two a day, but honestly that does get kinda unwieldy if you don't eat lunch at home.
