Sorry to be the combo breaker here.

I think it's a really nice thing that the owner is actually trying to make his dog feel a lot better, but I sincerely hope that the owner realizes that the pain will get greater and greater to his pet. It would be in his best interest (if he truly cared) to put his dog down if the pain becomes unbearable, and believe me - as a former dog owner who had to put one of their dogs down, you will know when it's time.

Agreed 100%, faith in humanity restored but if the owner wants the dog to pass the best way possible he'd just have it put down

What I find interesting is it is commonly held to be less cruel to an animal to put it down than to allow it to suffer, yet with people the exact opposite is done -- oftentimes even when a person him/herself wishes for death, is dying and near death, with no possibility of getting better, yet everything is done to extend their life even when they may be medically very near braindead. Without medical intervention the person would have died already yet we often keep people alive against their will and prolong their suffering.

Does this mean that we value animals more than humans?

Looks a lot like my old dog. He was like 19 years old with bad arthritis. I would put aspirin in a hot dog and give it to him, and it was working until he became aware that I was doing it. He had to be put to sleep because it was too much pain .

Not only will the pain be greater for the dog, but for the owner himself. Emotionally speaking, it would be really really difficult for him to put down a pet that he spent countless of hours being with. Prolonging the wait, putting down the dog becomes an option that wouldn't be considered, so it becomes physically detrimental to the dog and emotionally detrimental to the owner.

Sounds like a question for CT there.

To that end, as much as I know the pain of losing a pet (I lost a guinea pig when I was little), let's just appreciate the crowning moment of heartwarming.
