I think it's supposed to illustrate the hardships of life for third world farmers.
I managed to win it once. (Hint: Keep the wife pregnant every year until she says she doesn't want more kids or becomes infertile due to age) Click on individual characters to see individual stats.
You'll also want to build the hospital as soon as you can so you can get medicine for everyone. Education wasn't useful. Pigs frequently died off so don't bother with them. Chickens were a decent investment. You'll want at least one scythe to start with.
By the time you're able to buy off politicians and have full crop insurance, you're pretty close to winning.
