    Pokemon Blue

Kind of a cross-post from Keybeat.

I'm hooked on mastering blue once again and I am trying to assemble the ultimate meta-game team. Here's a list of what I have so far and a short explanation of why.

Zapdos - Immense special attack attributes so his lightning skills hit for ridiculous damage. As well he's effective against multiple types.

Dragonite - One of the highest HP's in the game as well his attack power is through the damn roof, hyper beam is simply unsurvivable to any type.

Mewtwo - No explanation needed as to why I have him, it's f*cking Mewtwo.

Charizard - Kind of a waste of a pokemon, this choice is more aesthetic than anything. He's pretty weak as far as fire pokemon go but I am a lover of dragons so yeah, lol. I'm thinking of trading him out for Moltres or Arcanine though so we'll see.

Pidgeot - This poke has a dual-purpose. He's my main FLY pokemon as Zap and Dragonite have their skillbars utilized already as well with Pidgeot's awesome flying type attacks he f*cking rapes fighting types.

Gyarados - This pokemon was designed by God. Seriously. Easily my favorite pokemon. He's a f*cking beast. Let me explain. He has HUGE HP, viciously high attack power and equally retarded high special attack power with decent defense and speed. He's also the only pokemon I know to be an "omni-type" pokemon. My Gyarados right now has the strongest water attack, Hydro Pump, the strongest fire attack, Fire Blast, the strongest lightning attack, Thunder, and the strongest normal attack, Hyper Beam. He's just retarded. The fact that he can have all of these different type attacks make him super effective against most pokemon types while only being susceptible to two types. He's the pokemon God's gift to mankind lol.

Okay so in conclusion, I'm looking for other people's ideas of the ideal team for pokemon blue. Please share your thoughts and comment on how my setup is if you would. Haven't played this game in years so I'm re-learning strategies haha.

You can do the same thing you're doing with Gyarados with Hitmonchan. Fire punch, Ice punch, Lightning Punch, Mega Punch

Actually, in RBY critical hit rate was strictly a function of the user's base speed, not an aspect of the move itself. Also, remember that the damage split didn't happen until Gen 4, so Hyper Beam is actually considered physical. (On the plus side, RBY has this glitch where if you KO your foe with Hyper Beam, you don't lose your next turn.)

However, I see your Gyarados and raise you Starmie. Hydro Pump, Thunder, Ice Beam and Psychic, all of which run off its nice Special, two of which get STAB and the other two giving you the infamous BoltBeam coverage, and it's faster than the water snake to boot. It's been OU in every generation for a number of damn good reasons.

The problem with Gyrados is that it's so weak to electric types that it makes it worthless to use despite the stats on it.

Hitmonchan doesn't get a STAB to any attack so he can't 2HKO Chansey. Also, Fighting types are awful in R/B/Y so don't even bother.

Gyarados isn't going to run into too much trouble as I see it. While thunderbolt is in everyone's team, you aren't going to get a pokemon that isn't at least neutral to any of the attacks you mentioned. The only thing I suggest is that you get thunderbolt instead of thunder: accuracy and any pokemon that you'd hit with a thunder will be almost OHKO'd by thunderbolt as well. Accuracy is better in that situation. Also, yo have no coverage against a Jolteon or Zapdos, but you'd switch out to dragonite at least. I think the coverage is fine. Gyarados is OU on Pokemon B/W for a reason: his weaknesses aren't enough to make him any less good.

                Pokemon discussions :')

I've never been that into comparing/contrasting stats to develop the perfect teams. I basically just trained until my Pokemon team was high enough level to rape the elite four anyway and would just be happy with that.

Oh I remember the day I completed my Pokedex in Red version, such satisfaction haha.
Damn thing took me forever. And after I did that I used a glitch to get Mew, cause I wanted all 151. =]

You picked my exact team, Phynx. GJ.

Although I do agree with Madokidoki in saying that thunderbolt > thunder but that's cuz I like hitting 100% of the time :P

Yeah, well, you only get one Thunderbolt TM (from Lt. Surge) and you can buy Thunder. :P

Your Gyarados is gonna run out of PP fast, since those moves have like 5-10 on them each, and are inaccurate. glhf tho.

Hmm, not sure I think it's only the one TM from Surge.

It's still better imo. 100% of the time is sick and no rain dance to make thunder hit 100%

                            Re: Pokemon Blue

                            6 Mewtwos with Psychic/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam/Recover.

It beats anything. And it's stupid. But you asked.

Ok maybe half of the mewtwos get amnesia thrown in there just so you can kill chansey and maybe snorlax easily. But really other than that you're fine.

In response to rushy, no, you can only get TM24 Thunderbolt from Surge. I think that might have changed in FRLG. Thunder you can get only one of in the Electric Plant where Zapdos is.

Creating an ideal team depends on what restrictions you put up. No trading? Species clause? No ubers? No multiple TMs? The answers to these questions drastically change the team. It looks like you follow species clause (maximum 1 of any pokemon), but reuse TMs. I would go with this:

                            Mewtwo - Psychic/TBolt/IBeam/Recover - It's Mewtwo, it's the best poke, it rapes.
Dragonite - Body Slam/Hyper Beam/Surf/Fire Blast - It has crazy high attack, use it and abuse the hyper beam glitch. I throw fire blast on there just so somebody on my team has it. And I like surf for type coverage. You can certainly throw Double Team/Rest or whatever on there.
Sandslash - Earthquake/Rock Slide/Swords Dance/Slash or Swift (to counter Double Team) - Sandslash is my favorite poke. I can't tell you how many times I sat there with Sandslash Swords Dancing up while my opponent was double teaming up. Then I start hitting him with Swift and he starts crying.
Starmie - Hydro Pump/Ice Beam/Psychic/TBolt - One of the better special sweepers as it has an awesome movepool and high speed.
Dodrio - Drill Peck/Body Slam/Reflect/Haze or Double Team - I like Dodrio over Tauros as a physical sweeper due to ground immunity and because I use Snorlax too and don't want two mono-normals just in case I run into a Machamp or something.
Snorlax - Double Team/Rest/Body Slam/Earthquake - One of the best abusers of Double Team/Rest. If your opponent has no hazer, you win. Body Slam everything. Earthquake hits ghosts.

                            Other options:
                            Alakazam - Psychic/Barrier/Substitute/Recover
                            Slowbro - Surf/Psychic/Thunder Wave/Amnesia
                            Gengar - Psychic/Thunderbolt/Hypnosis/Confuse Ray
                            Exeggutor - Psychic/Mega Drain or Double Edge/Sleep Powder/Explosion
                            Chansey - Seismic Toss/Minimize/Thunder Wave/Softboiled
                            Tauros - Earthquake/Body Slam/Hyper Beam/Blizzard
                            Lapras - Ice Beam/Double Team/Rest/Confuse Ray
                            Vaporeon - Surf/Ice Beam/Rest/Haze
Any of the three legendary birds
                            Mew with whatever.

I played way too much pokemon in middle and high school. But really liked the game more for making teams with my favorites. I'm playing through blue one last time right now with my favorite pokes from blue: Blastoise (Big Daddy), Pidgeot (Wings), Sandslash (Sandy), Mew (Mr. Butters), Dragonite (Pickles), and Articuno (Haven't decided what I'll name it yet).

                              Mewtwo - Amnesia/Psychic/coverage/Rest = game over
3 amnesias = 999 Special oops this isn't broken at all (actually I think you only need 2 amnesias for max spc)

Personally I avoid using Mewtwo cause then you have an ubers metagame in which everyone has a Mewtwo. Not really fun. I've also always played with evasion clause so it's weird reading sets with Double Team cause normally it's not allowed. Idk I think it just makes the game more luck oriented than skill.

I was recently getting back into the RBY metagame, and so I got my Surfing Pikachu to have a gimmick surfing Raichu to OHKO opposing Golem and Rhydon. My rough team off the top of my head is:

                              Starmie - Hydro Pump/Tbolt/Ice Beam/(T-wave/recover/Psychic) [special sweeper + favourite gen1 poke ever]
Persian - Slash/HyperBeam/Bubblebeam/Tbolt (kinda wanted to try her out, although theres no good place for her, probably will be replaced. STAB critical hits are nice though. Ends up being 210 bp iirc)
Exeggutor - Sleep Powder/Psychic/Mega Drain/Explosion (lead and one of my faves as well)
                              Raichu - Surf/Tbolt/T-wave/Body Slam (lol)
                              Golem - EQ/Rock Slide/Body Slam/Explosion (physical wall)
Snorlax - idk what set yet (special wall)

Swords Dance Mew is also a nice poke with SD/Hyper beam/EQ/Softboiled or Explosion. Or if you have no OHKO Move Clause, T-wave/Fissure/Horn Drill/Softboiled. It's a pretty lmfao set though. Although, again, Mew is uber so lol mewtwo
