It takes a while, honestly. I've been playing DotA for over 2 years now and I still am pretty amateur at it. Just find a character you like and stick with him for a while. Playing RD, SD, or AR is a good way to find someone since you are either limited in selection or forced to play someone. It sounds silly but playing All Pick makes it difficult since there are so many choices and you ended up just kind of picking someone and people will complain if it's a good/bad choice or if you just plain suck (which will resort people into whining about why you picked said character in the first place). Tutorials are a good way to find out what items work best and what to pick during certain situations or if you find yourself stuck a against certain types of enemies.

Also always try to last hit the enemy's creeps as well as your own. Don't attack them yourself until you know you can get them in one hit.

I've played DotA for a good 4 years, and I switched over to HoN. But I tell ya man, the community sucks balls all around. Everyone bitches and complains no matter what you do. Best thing to do is play with friends or not at all. That's the only reason I've stuck with it for so long. That and don't care too much about what anyone says.

the whole game is about pub stomping and event hat gets boring after awhile. the only fun i get out of hon nowadays are clan matches and those are easily trumped by DotA's better gameplay, map-wise and hero-balance wise.


I mean come on, Behemoth is so OP, Tree is OP, and Maliken/DarkLady is just unstoppable.
