One day my ps2 stopped working and I opened it up to see what was wrong inside. After a few tests, the unit that moves the laser up and down the disc doesn't appear to be moving. I checked the ribbon cable that connects it to the motherboard and it's snug, but it is still not moving and it still says disc read error... Somebody help!!!

Re: Need Ps2 Help!!!
Are you sure its the ps2? It might just be the disc itself causing the error.

Re: Need Ps2 Help!!!
Usually I'd say to go to Google, and you still should, but I've repaired way too many PS2s not to help.
The device that moves the laser up and down is called the 'worm gear'. The laser mount should have a small plastic or metal (depending on your model) extension that reaches over to the worm gear. On the end are two small teeth that connect to the worm gear such that when it spins, it will move the laser up and down.
Assuming that's OK, grease/clean the two metal rods the laser mount slides on, decrease some of the pressure on them (but not too much or the teeth won't connect to the worm gear), etc.
One technique for diagnosing is to gently slide the laser up and down the track yourself. If it's too easy, it's probably not connecting with the worm gear. If it's too hard, the worm gear isn't powerful enough to push it on its own. It's hard to tell you what the "normal" setting is, but it should move without much resistance.
The best way for anyone to help is to be descriptive. As much as you can. Such as what EXACTLY happens when you turn the console on, what EXACTLY you've done, and what you think might've caused it.Comment
