    Tetris DS

I recently got back into Tetris while playing ZTetris in class on my good ol' TI-84 Plus Silver. I decided to pick up Tetris DS and give it a shot, mostly for the wi-fi option to test my skills against players around the world. I learned that I'm not as good at Tetris as I thought I was.

All I've played so far is normal and mission mode, and a few two player wi-fi matches, and I'm having a blast. There's still a lot more to do that I haven't tried yet.

If you love Tetris or ever did love Tetris, you'll love this. The best part is the ability to play against another person whenever you want. If any FFRers picked up the game, let me know! post your friend code here and we can go head-to-head!

Ahhhaha, that's how I got back into Tetris too. Good times in class with my beloved TI-89 Titanium...

I was very excited to hear about Tetris DS with wi-fi capabilities. I'll surely be getting it at some point, but not quite yet. Not only am I trying to save money, but I have no wi-fi access here at the dorm. So, probably sometime this summer.

Oh Yeah. Tetris rocks. But, you don't get to hear the tetris song until you clear 180 lines on the standard mode! What's up with that?

            Re: Tetris DS

Benny, my high score on ZTetris is above 19K. I'm too lazy to check my actual high score.

So it turns out I'm not as bad as I thought. I just needed to get used to the DS's control scheme for Tetris. Last night I improved my record to 16-9. I practically reduced one guy's rating back to 5000 (the rating everybody starts with) and knocked a good chunk of his 5600 off.

I got to some of the other modes. Touch is Balloon Fight themed. The object is to get a cage of balloons to the bottom. Yo use the stylus to manipulate a tower of Tetriminos and clear lines to make the cage reach the bottom. There's also a touch puzzle mode involved to move blocks and clear certain objectives using only the stylus. There's 50 puzzles, and I'm stuck at 16. It's easily my favorite after wi-fi.

Puzzle mode is straight-up Tetris-style puzzles. They're strictly scripted: you'll choose a Tetrimino piece and the orientation you want it in, and it gets dropped in in the most reasonable spot. There's 200 total, and the first one I had to do some extra thinking on was 6. Again, there's nothing short of challenge there.

The standard marathon mode requires you to clear 200 lines. Any decent Tetris player knows this requires an insane amount of practice and luck to get right.

Mission mode requires you to complete certain objectives on a standard Tetris field while staying within a time limit. It gets REALLY hectic the further you get.

The two other modes, push and catch, are nice twists, but not really worth explaining in my opinion. Tetris is a puzzle game, so the puzzle element is where it really shines.

Like I said before, if you like Tetris (and now that I've played it a bit more puzzle games in general), pick it up and give it a shot. Bonus points if you have wi-fi!

nForcer, when you're opponent has a few block under you do you try to get rid of those first or make your own lines and not really bother with the dark boxes?

I'm usually trying to build up 4-line combos to hit with the 4x1 blocks. Once I finish up my planned combos, I try to work down to the gray blocks, build up a 4-line combo around that, and keep working down in that fashion. It's a good strategy against some people, but it doesn't always work. If your opponent is good at comboing several 4-liners in a row, it's best to try keeping a minimal amount of lines and countering their combos.
