This is going to be a dumb question

but I have never played any of the GTA games. How the hell does it work / should I buy it / do you have to grind for anything / what all can you do? / is it a sandbox game? / is there a singleplayer mode, and how does it work? / what are some fun things you can do?

How the hell does it work

you follow a predefined story line until the end of the game, like most other story-based games. other than that, there is recurring missions that you can do, as well as general exploration.

should I buy it

haven't played it yet.

do you have to grind for anything

if it's anything like other GTA games, most likely not.

what all can you do?

as per previous GTA games and in additional to the main and recurring misions -- hijack vehicles of all types (boats, airplanes, cars, bikes, etc.) and commit mass destruction.

is it a sandbox game?

yes.

is there a singleplayer mode, and how does it work?

this game is singleplayer by default AFAIK and it works as explained in previous answers.

what are some fun things you can do?

skydive out of hijacked jets, bulldoze tons of stuff with a tank, ridiculous stunts.

Can you stop single player at any time and wreak havoc willy-nilly? I.e. how does one "lose" single-player?

you can fail, abort, or complete a mission. after that point, it's sandbox mode again.

When multiplayer launches I'll be all over that since it has it's own currency and heist system. Teammates actually matter here. lol
