    Planetside 2.

Does this faction have any Planetside 2 players?

Just wondering how much of a fanbase this game has around here. My screenname is Blueltth and I can be found on the Mattherson server. I play as the New Conglomerate.

For those who don't know, Planetside 2 is a Massive Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter - free of course, from Sony Online Entertainment. It's a giant "capture the base" game with three different factions and you can use tanks, ATVs, aircraft, gunships, transport ships, turrets etc. to achieve your goals.

Supplementary reason for thread: A 5 week long tournament begins tomorrow.

    Soldiers of Auraxis!

This is a call to arms. Get ready to fight for your empire on a global scale in the PlanetSide 2 World Domination Series (PS2WDS) pre-season event! If you don’t have an empire, head over here and take our empire quiz. We’ll get you situated in no time!

    Now for the event details!

    Dates:
Start: September 16th, 2013 at 12:00 AM PDT
End: October 20th, 2013 at 12:00 AM PDT
Weeks start and end on Mondays at 12:00 AM PDT

    The basics:
There will be a weekly objective for everyone (pre-season will have the same objective each week)
Each week, we'll have an empire winner
The event will last 5 weeks
On the 5th week, we'll have the final winner of the entire pre-season event
Every server will be involved and you'll be able to see the overall score for each empire as well as the overall score for each empire on a specific server (scoring detail will be provided in the article I mentioned above)
Rewards will be given to every player who participated in each week’s competition on the global winning empire

The pre-season challenge is all about territory control, so conquer the world and hold it for as long as possible.
    Scoring system:
Each hour that a territory remains owned by an empire that empire is given 3 points credited to that server.
Each small outpost that is captured gives that empire 1 point credited to that server.
Each large outpost that is captured gives that empire 2 points credited to that server.
Each facility that is captured gives that empire 5 points credited to that server.

    Rewards:
Each week, the players who participated in the competition on the winning faction will attain: 3 Day Experience Boosts
After the five week period, the players who participated in the competition on the winning faction will receive an: Empire Specific Decal and Title

The leaderboards will be updated with points from the territory control and captures that occurred in real-time, showcasing each server as well as the overall score for each empire. Players will be able to view scores by season, week, and current date. The PS2WDS site will go live on Monday, September 16th, 2013.

We’ll also have weekly recaps and all kinds of streams throughout the week, so be sure to tune into the PlanetSide 2 Twitch Channel.

As you may have guessed, this is a series, so we have future plans to make more seasons with new challenges and new rewards. If you have any feedback, be sure to leave us a message on the PlanetSide 2 forums.

played this back in the early beta, stopped playing because i got like 20 fps on this crappy computer and it got worse the longer i played.

have any big optimizations happened between may 2012 and now?

      Re: Planetside 2.

i played planetside 2, but the main problem i had with the game is that you could push a faction all the way back to their warp gate, but you couldn't actually "win"

i realize this is somewhat fixed now, but the other problem i had is that it's really hard to do much as a single player. even with a few friends that know what they are doing, it's hard to do much if your faction is full of a bunch of bads. in this case, there isn't much you can do other than watch every landmark get taken from you no matter how hard you push objectives or how many kills you get.

also, like rgx said, optimization was pretty terrible.

        Re: Planetside 2.

Well the game itself has significantly improved performance wise for me on my laptop. I can now pilot and blow things up on my i7 laptop without much interference from lag. They've gone through several performance patches and continue to do so. Several months ago when I started, it was difficult to go thorugh 10 fps or less, but I can play the game with relative ease nowadays.

With the performance improvements, people have also noticably gotten better at the game as well. Some of the dogfights I go through are long and gruelling and involve flying around and sometimes through tech plants and bio labs. The game is very different playwise from what it was in May 2012.

          Re: Planetside 2.

i doubt that performance improvements are the key reason as to people getting better at a game. they can help, sure, but i think it's more the fact that people stick around long enough to actually learn how to play the game.

could you address the other part of my post?

Well the objectives aren't to kill people - but rather to capture bases or "points" of a base. To do so, it may involve killing sunderers which people can spawn from or other tanks and aircraft. Doing so individually is doable with the use of C-4, rocket launchers, tank mines, and a bunch of other explosive goodies. It's also very satisfying to blow up a max with a bouncing betty or C-4.

If you're thinking of going into a base solo and trying to kill everyone and capture the base alone, no you're going to die. That's not the purpose of the game. If you're referring to a zerg rush of people ghost capturing bases, this is being addressed with the implementation of a "lattice system" - the battle is directed by certain chains so there's only so many places you can go. This means ghost capturing is almost non existent now. It still happens sure, but on a lesser scale.

The game's purpose is large volume of people attacking a large volume of people. Lately, this has become more of a fact with that lattice system implementation. It's on two of the three continents right now (Amerish still has no lattice system, but that will change in the next major update). There's also a rumoured 4th continent, "Hossin" - a tree filled, swamp continent. I don't have any other comment on that though.

The game is also much more interesting if you put yourself in a squad though. Press the "insert" key by default on your keyboard to auto join into a squad and you'll likely end up in a platoon or squad that at least knows what they're doing.

                Hope this helps.

Edit: MI40 it's Capture-the-flag esque, but rather than flags, you're capturing bases via the use of taking over certain points and overthrowing the people there for a period of time.

                Edit 2: Some individual gameplay:

Teamwork gameplay with a first timer:

A little older but here's a tank battle:

                  Re: Planetside 2.

i already mentioned that it's me and a group of friends that know how to play better than the average joe (whether you believe it or not is up to you, but just assume it's true for the sake of argument). i don't know where you got the idea that i was trying to go rambo into a base by myself anywhere.

it doesn't matter how much we do and ultimately how many objectives we take, we still get pushed back because the rest of the faction isn't doing anything. there is only so much of the map that can be covered simultaneously by a small group.

ultimately i am referring to ghost zerging. the fact that it is being addressed seems rather promising. i might try playing again whenever that happens.
