Re: SMOC Collaboration Pack Released!!!
Finally finished playing everything and leaving some notes/commentary. Overall, pack is enjoyable though it has it's share of good files and bad files.
Huge brick wall of text below, etc. Pretty much only mentioned notable errors and stuff that can be changed or improved.
Asa ga hae te kuru (Jin)
Beginning starts off funky but that transition into the [14] jumpjacks is way too sudden and a huge difficulty spike (BG effect was cool though). Holds are way too long in length and Mine placements way too close to the notes. Pattern usage in general is comprised almost entirely of staircase patterns which creates a lot of one hand biased patterns that are tricky to combo. Transition to M84 is awkward and sudden too but I guess you can't really help it due to how the song is. Layering is fairly solid, just needs more pattern variation.
Ataque de caca (Nibac)
Heavy - Don't really need the 32nd mini-freezes to emphasize the guitar in the beginning measures. 16th minijacks after M16 don't even emphasize anything and don't feel right other than adding scoring factor to this. Rest of it is just boring, non-PR 16th stream which makes this boring to playthrough. Should've definitely cut the song by nearly half the length since the rest is pretty much copy paste and a complete snoozefest.
Oni - Jumps are abused but I guess it's forgivable for being a harder chart. Good to see you layering in the percussive jumps. Pretty much the same notes for Heavy are applicable here.
Blue Earth (MongSang)
M20+ the 16th notes right before your 4th jump placements are all percussive notes so you can layer them as jumps as well (alternatively, linking the 16th notes into the jump as minijacks would be a good way to emphasize it). M46+ you really don't need to be super consistent with layering guitar holds so you could pretty much get rid of all the shorter ones and leave in the long held notes (which are also a bit long in length and could be trimmed slightly shorter). Overall, layering in this was good and this was fairly enjoyable to playthrough.
Broken Moon! (Eight Minus)
Layering in this was solid. Only commentary I have is that there could've been a lot more hand placements for technical layering and emphasis which would also add some more variation to file. Nothing erroneous worth mentioning, fairly enjoyable overall.
Canopus (D.E)
GENERIC TRANCE JUMPSTREAM YEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH. Normally this would turn some people off because it gets boring and repetitive (most generic trance like this isn't that interesting to step for 4key). M65+ you could layer in jumps to some of the 4th notes to layer the *claps*/percussion. Also the holds are too long in length and as a result it does create some awkward holdstreaming at M75+. Trimming them down a little would reduce both reading density and awkwardness. M82+ some jumps to layer piano chords would be interesting. M113+ jump placements I'm not quite sure what exactly they go to. Should've just continued to layer the bass with jumps. M161+ you're missing a few piano chord jumps to keep it consistent. Overall, not the best song to step but the layering in this was pretty much all you could do.
Chaser (DJ Tatsune Zeku)
Should've consistently layered in the bass with jumps to add more variation and keep layering consistent throughout. Jumpjacks and that 32nd bursts are difficult to hit. Layering is decent overall but there wasn't anything interesting or notable about this file, mostly due to song choice.
Croqel Part II (moches)
Part I was definitely more interesting to playthrough but you did pretty much all you could with the song. Typical mochers file just pretty lackluster.
Demystify Feast (Frandre.S)
I'll probably be biased when reviewing this since I highly enjoy dondon's file for this song. 32nd patterns in the entire file were absolutely horrible and that alone made me already want to quit out of the file. M57+ I don't understand what that 8th [1] jack even emphasizes when you clearly have the piano that you can layer which would be much more interesting. The ending, although adds to climax theory, is TERRIBLE to hit. This would only be replayable for the difficulty and scoring but aside from that this is a complete and total dump that won't be played.
First Kiss (EBSO)
Beginning measures could use jumps to layer piano chords. M13+ there's some background 16ths which would've been interesting to layer in and would add variation. Overall, layering is solid and you did what you could with a song choice like this (which is pretty boring and uninteresting).
Future gazer (ca25nada)
You're erroneously missing some key jump placements in the beginning measures to keep the piano layering consistent and flowing (and you could also layer bass on top). Overall, layering is solid, just have to be careful where you place minijacks/jumpjacks for emphasis. Fairly enjoyable and stepped to its potential.
Gabriel Mirage (Einar)
As soon as M19 came in I quit out. Jump+holdstream, this ain't no O2Jam tatsujin. The layering is fine but those holds absolutely ruin this file and make it aids to play.
Gosyujin Sama Romance☆Raspberry Misairu!! (md)
There needs to be percussive jumps on the 4ths to counterbalance the amount of hand usage in this file. The jump layering is all over the place is hard to follow at times but the layering itself is pretty solid. Kinda feels like a leonid file (8th jacks and rather non-PR steps).
Hyper∞LATiON (Cholong)
I had this song sitting in my WIPs folder for a long ass time but never got around to making a dump for it.
Heavy - Relatively similar to how I'd layer this but a lot of layering choices I would do completely differently. Still quite hard and dumpy but it's bearable in comparison to the harder chart, lol.
Oni - Definitely a lot dumpier than I'd've made this. Some layering choices were funky. Patterns as a whole man me throw up but it's a hard dump so it can't be helped, rofl.
KyokutouShiki (Nohara)
Definitely need to layer more percussion with jumps for a song like this. Jump usage is all over the place and difficult to follow. M29+ I don't get what those mini-freezes on [1] are even going to. Overall, file has a few well layered and structured sections but other sections could use revision. At the very least I can say that the hand usage in this file was great and the file as a whole flowed relatively well.
Level5 -judgelight- (Dakemoto)
Missing a few key bass jumps to keep the layering consisten throughout. The parts where you did column 1 bass were funky for me since I'd rather see them as spread apart jumps. Some hand usages were overemphasized like M23+ (though I can see what you were trying to do here and it does add a bit of variation) while in other sections you could've used some more hand placements. 16th jumpstream part at M43+, although adds variation and contributes to climax theory, I'm not quite feeling since it's mostly comprised of invisible layering and doesn't quite fit (similar to some of the old Otaku's Dream files that have invisible 16th streams). Overall, layering flowed and had some nice variation. Just needs more structure to jump and hand placements and less invisible 16th layering to make this better.
Macuilxochitl (leonid)
This was very fun and enjoyable. You missed a few piano chord jump placements in the 2nd half of the file, which I'm not sure whether they were purposely left out. WHY DON'T YOU STEP MORE SONGS LIKE THIS AND IN THIS STYLE INSTEAD OF YOUR USUAL DUMPY STUFF LKASDJLKASJDKJASD;ADKJHGJKASDJKHDAKM,MN9ENJKHKJHSKDJASNDKJADDSANADSADS.M,ADSADSKJHASD,MNASDLkASDOIUDSADASDASADS
Mellow D Fantasy (Ca25nada&Yume)
Heavy - Good as an easier chart. Thought this needed some more percussive jumps to fill in empty gaps and keep the file flowing.
Oni - Freezes could've been cut down to only the long, held notes. But I do admit, the holds brighten up the chart and make it a little more interesting and challenging to playthrough. Without them it'd be a complete snoozefest. Layering is great and flowed well.
Mickey! (x1.2ver) (Sensationer)
Freezes are abused and makes this unnecessarily dense and awkward to read. Feels like a O2Jam chart, lol. Layering is solid, just would be way better to playthrough without all those holds.
MMMaster (AG-System)
Heavy - Good as an easier chart. Because it ends earlier than the Oni chart there's some delay at the very end of the file so you should've just continued stepping up until the end.
Oni - Could use more piano chord jumps and even hand usages. Could also use some rainbow grace notes to accentuate the piano more and some certain background sounds, which would also add variation to layering. M57+ the 32nd trills are difficulty spikes but there's really no way to get around this other than underlayering them as 24ths. Glad that you stepped the swing in this song, which flowed very well. Piano solo was also fairly solid.
MODEL FT2 Miracle Version (Lynn)
A lot of patterns are pretty awkward to hit, despite being accurately layered. Definitely replayable for scoring factor for a song and chart as intense as this.
Music of the Spheres (Alrios)
Tsukasa detected. Definitely needs more piano chord jumps. M9+ the jumps are confusing to follow since you're switching between layering different aspects of the song. M17+ I don't even follow any of that jump usage at all and it seems like you threw jumps wherever you felt like. M33+ holds are way too long and create awkward holdstreaming patterns. M49+ I don't get the minijack usages here when there's literally NOTHING to layer or emphasize (ghost stepping/invisible layering). Overall, file needs a total rehaul and more of a defined structure to layering and pattern usages.
Only one for you (Akjini)
More of the piano playing in the background should've been layered in for Beat 42+ for variation and to keep the file flowing. Was very pleased to see the rainbow grace note usage in this file. Overall, file was great and enjoyable. Layering flowed and was very well done. Only minor commentary is that there could've been more mini-jack and jumpjack usages to emphasize certain aspects of the song.
Over Sky (Uis)
BPM Gimmicks added a nice touch. Holds in the beginning measures could be shortened more. Invisible 16ths were used in moderation which was nice to see. Overall, flowed well and layering is solid. Only minor commentary is perhaps more of the bass could've been layered with 4th jumps.
Relation Again (Lynn&Dakemoto)
Layering was great. Good to see rainbow grace note usage though I actually thought there could've been more of it. Thought that some more of the piano chords could be emphasized with hand placements. Overall, flowed very well and it was fun to play.
Renai Circulation -HappyHardCoreMix- (HSound)
Creative use of bg changes. Holds are way too long in lengths and you could cut down on the usage a bit more. Missing a few key bass jump placements. Wasn't feeling the quad and hand usages at times. Nice mine usages. Overall, pretty lackluster but fairly enjoyable as a generic 16th jumpstream file.
Son Of Sun (Kong)
I might be biased for reviewing this since I liked stargroup's chart for this song. Didn't really feel a few hand usages at times. Jumps were excessive which I thought you could've cut down a bit on. Overall, layering is solid, just a bit boring to playthrough.
SPiCa (Zzibu)
Thought that you could've layered the piano in the beginning with jumps since it'd emphasize it better. Once it picks up the jump and hold usages become pretty questionable to follow and distinguish what exactly they go to. More of the percussion should've been layered in with jumps since it is very prominent in this song. Long holds could be shortened a lot more to avoid unnecessary holdstreaming and awkward patterns. M126+ you definitely don't need all those holds to layer the guitar; minimize to only the longer held notes since it's quite obvious what you're layering. Overall, pretty decent as an easy beginner file; layering is minimalistic and not particularly hard. Just needs more redefining for the jump layering and hold usages. Considering the song choice, you did what you could (it's a pretty long and boring song).
Sumidagawa Natsu Koi Uta (ALICE_)
Very unique colour stop gimmick. Nothing blatantly erroneous about the layering and overall it was enjoyable to playthrough. Thought some more background sounds and hands could've been layered in.
Sunny Shiny Ring (Yume)
Heavy - M35+ I'd suggest placing mines here to layer whatever is going on in the background in order to signify that you're about to change layering choices since it's a very sudden change that can throw players off and it'd also fill in the empty gaps. Rhythmically, the 16th streams in this chart are easier to follow than the oni chart, however it does get pretty dull and boring hitting the same patterns over and over again (the jumps at the very least mask this and it doesn't feel nearly as repetitive). Overall, well layered and chart is fun and enjoyable to playthrough.
Oni - Beginning few measures you definitely could've emphasized the piano with jumps as it'd feel generally more accurate than single notes. M35+ I'd suggest placing mines here to layer whatever is going on in the background in order to signify that you're about to change layering choices since it's a very sudden change that can throw players off and it'd also fill in the empty gaps. M43+ I don't quite understand what exactly those 8th jumps are even going to. Layering the jumps on 4th notes to follow bass would've been a wiser choice since it's easier to follow rhythmically. Same deal at M91+. Overall, well layered and chart is fun and enjoyable to playthrough.
Sweet Rain (G.S.S)
M4+ the 32nds are rhythmically incorrect. M5+ definitely could've used jump placements to layer the bass since it's very prominent in this song and it'd also fill up empty gaps and keep the file flowing a lot better. Also I didn't get what exactly the [3] and [4] long freezes even went to which seemed completely randomly thrown in. M9+ once the jumps kick in they're pretty broken up and hard to follow. The usage itself isn't consistent enough to follow very well and tell what they are even supposed to emphasize/layer. M17+ same deal about having bass jumps but in addition to that you should vary up the patterns to make it less repetitive and more interesting. M33+ the hold and hand usages are pretty random and they don't emphasize much. M49+ you've got that ascending/descending staircase synth playing in the back which you should've just layered with straight 16th streams for variation and it's much easier to follow than what you did here. Overall, file was very generic and littered with many technical errors. Needs a rehaul with layering and pattern usages, but it was at the very least a decent attempt.
Tatta hitotsu dake (PAS Beats EMP)
Holds are a bit long in length but considering the song choice, they're okay since they make the file a bit more interesting to playthrough and it adds variation to layering. The song cut for this was very sudden and it ends off very awkwardly. Overall, solid layering and good as an easy chart aimed towards beginners.
The From Hell (Kardia)
Heavy - Pretty much the exact same thing I said for the Oni chart however this time I didn't quit out at M53+. The rest of the file is a complete snoozefest since you're barely layering anything interesting in the song and the hold abuse in this alone makes this barely playable. File would've been better if you cut the song and stepped about less than 2 minutes of it since the entire file is pretty much a huge copy+paste job and as such it's way too repetitive and boring to playthrough.
Oni - The holds alone already made me want to quit out of the file (this isn't O2Jam, you don't need to be that consistent with hold usage let alone use holds that long in length). For a harder chart it definitely needs more percussion layering with jumps since it's pretty dull when you're only following guitar. Also as a result of not layering in percussion you ignored layered a lot of prominent sounds that would've added layering variation and interest to the chart. The hand usage in this file barely emphasizes anything and as a result it feels funky to hit and playthrough. Would've worked better for layering cymbal crashes and the likes. M53+ made me quit out of the file. I'm sorry if this offends you but that pattern itself is absolutely terrible to hit.
The Prototype (FreeStep)
Should've been way more consistent on the bass layering with jumps and layered every 4th note. What you currently have is too spread out and as such becomes weird to follow when you're playing through this. M25+ you should've layered or at the very least placed mines to layer what's going on. This signifies the player that you're about to change layering choices and it fills empty gaps. M81+ you should changed up the jump patterns more to cover more area. Using the same patterns over and over again gets boring and uninteresting. Overall, file is repetitive and boting but this is mostly due to song choice alone. Lots of copy+pasting going on which leads to a boring file with little to no variation.
Uranus (CoolSlayer)
Heavy - Decent as easier chart. Not that much of a charting change compared to Oni though so the difficulties seem very closely aligned.
Oni - Could've layered more of the background piano to fill in empty gaps and keep the file flowing though it isn't really necessary. Only suggesting this since this is the hardest chart afterall. M33+ you could've layered in the bass that kicks in with jumps. Beat 138.5 should be a jump to layer the *clap* noise to be consistent with everything afterwards (even though you're layering piano chords, pretty much all of them fall at the same timing as those claps so layering them in would make it feel generally more accurate and consistent). Same deal at Beat 154.5, 168.5 and M43+ in general. Break at M52 you should've layered in with notes or at least used mines to fill in empty gaps. Beat 205.5 the five single notes here would work better as jumps to capture the climax feel of those cymbal crashes. Overall, well layered and nothing blatantly erroneous. Despite song choice being generic trance, this was fairly enjoyable and you did pretty much everything you could with the song to make it interesting.
Warlords of Atlantis (Cloe)
Beginning measures thought you could layer in the background melodies to keep the file flowing. M10+ you could've layered in the piano chords with jumps for variation, since they overlap with your current layering. M39+ not sure why you stopped layering in the percussive jumps. M42+ there are piano chord jumps you missed and didn't layer which I'm not quite sure whether or not you left out on purpose. It still flows without them but I'm only mentioning it because you layered them in at Beat 177.5 which was pretty random. Overall, layering was solid and it flowed well. Fairly enjoyable for being a generic 16th jumpstream file.
Yakusoku -HappyHyperStarmiX- (PLANET)
Heavy - Empty section at M66 could use some note placements or at the very least mines. Hands are a bit much but overall this is good as an easier chart.
Oni - M6, since you only layered percussion in the measures before but switched to bass here, what you can do is layer on top of what you have by placing hands to layer the percussion. That would make this layering transition feel better. M48+ 16th stream starts pretty late; actually starts at M46. Overall, layering was solid and it flowed. There were a lot of layering changes in this file which is nice to see but didn't quite transition well into each other. Hands were used minimalistically, which is also nice to see but could've been used more sparsely and not strictly limited to cymbal crashes.
Yonjuu Gonen no Yukisakura (Psicho)
32nd patterns are tricky to hit and combo and don't quite flow. M50+ I thought the layering would've worked better if you underlayered and kept the jumps for only the prominent piano chords being played. Overall, well layered despite being very repetitive mostly due to the song itself. Fun and replayable for the scoring factor from the jumpstreams and 32nd bursts.Comment
