It takes practice and patience. Over time you'll really want to step a song, and you simply can't resist stepping it.

Take me for example, I'm trying to step The Divine Suicide of K by Protest the Hero for pad, with no one's skeleton (basically, I'm starting from scratch). I ended up getting into sync issues around 2 minutes in, and wanted to quit. But, I got really bored, with nothing to do, and decided to delve into it one more time, and I fixed the issue after getting really frustrated with it. You can step the song, you just have to be willing to commit your time to it if you have nothing else to do. Force yourself to keep going if need be, haha.

EDIT: I think I may have mis-read this; are you trying to step a song that's like 3-5 minutes long? Or trying to simply get through playing it?

No you read it right. I have the patience of but I guess i'm one of those type of people who wants to finish it quickly, but it seems by doing that, I get bored. I'll take your advice and take my time, and force myself.

You have to keep in mind that it depends on the song type as well. Stepping something that is essentially random (i.e. xanopticon) for five minutes or is nonconstant bpm (like dream theater) is a lot harder than long songs that are essentially well behaved, like infinity ~true end~ and such.

You shouldn't start stepping a marathon in any case unless you greatly desire to see it finished and have a mental image of what it looks like throughout the song so you don't get caught offguard and dissuaded by a pattern you weren't mentally prepared to handle.

I was waiting for somebody to say something like this ^_^.
“Beware the irrational, however seductive. Shun the 'transcendent' and all who invite you to subordinate or annihilate yourself. Distrust compassion; prefer dignity for yourself and others. Don't be afraid to be thought arrogant or selfish... Suspect your own motives, and all excuses. Do not live for others any more than you would expect others to live for you.”

It took me 6 months to finish Skeletor... Then to have the second half, the part that pretty much took the last 4 months because I just didn't open stepmania, cut for whatever reason...

I've also done files in 45 minutes start to finish. It changes ever so slightly from song to song.
