    Sim files for dummies?

I read the Sticky on this, but that's a big blur of Blah Blah Blah to me.

All I want to know is, Is there any way to make a simfile, for stepmania, Easily? I really wish i could make them But I just have no clue how to do it.

I don't even know how to make a .DWI file, much less know what to do once I've made it.

I have stepmania 3.9, and I went to edit/sync songs, but it is a mystery to me...

Anything anyone could suggest is appreciated. I'm Am very musically talented, and I believe I could make steps everyone would appreciate, but when it comes to computers, I'm retarded. I Usually can learn things quickly though.

    Thanks.

    (p.s. Step-by-step would be nice)

    (p.s.s. I have a mac, I hope I can still do this)

    Re: Sim files for dummies?

The easiest way to make a DWI-file is to copy an existing DWI from another, make a new folder and paste the mp3 and the DWI in it. Edit the DWI so that the song title, song artist and BPM etc is correct. It should now be selectable in the sync/edit menu.

When you're in the editor, press F1 and learn all the hotkeys there and stuff.

From this point you can either go find a simple step-by-step guide, or do like me and explore it by yourself.

To find the BPM of songs, use this: http://mixmeister.com/download_freestuff.html

          Re: Sim files for dummies?

Thank you, I'm going to try this with an easy song and get back to you

EDIT: Most songs have a .dwi and a .sm file, Do I copy both in a new folder? Or just the .dwi?

and Some songs have .dwi.old and .sm.old files, what do I do with these?

Only copy one of these. Either the .sm or the .dwi, doesn't matter. Personally I use .sm

The .old-files are backups. Everytime you save ingame they will be created. Delete these when your file is complete.

              Ok, cool.

Thanks man, I'ma go try it.

EDIT: so under BMPS I put the BPM? Cause the one that's there now Is a bunch of crazy numbers...

I only put one number for now right?

Also I have a mac so that BMP program doesn't work, Is it absolutely necessary to have the DMP completely accurate?

I'm am pretty talented, And I can Count out beats pretty well...

                Re: Sim files for dummies?

                BPM = Beats Per Minute

Count the number of beats using a stopwatch/metronome/bpm finding program and put that number in.

                  Re: Sim files for dummies?

I can do it with a clock and counting it out, I know what BMP is, I'm just wondering if It has to be 100% accurate...

And If I only put one number for the BMP in the .sm file... Because right now, it looks like this.

                  #BPMS:0.000=128.260,64.000=127.500,132.000=180.000,147.000=187.500,204.000=154.420,283.000=155.000,284.000=155.500,364.000=154.000,396.000=156.000,433.000=97.500,440.000=64.500,456.000=62.500;

EDIT 2: Ok. BMP It has to be accurate, I get it. Now where can I get a program that will do it for mac?

                    Re: Sim files for dummies?

In some simfiles the bpm will change, that's why there are multiple numbers there. Delete everything following "0.000=128.260"

Now, replace the 128.260 with the bpm of your song. Make sure that the bpm of the song is followed by ";"

If you are going to count beats, I would reccomend opening the song in a program that has a timer. On mac I don't know what this would be, but I assume you have some program that will say how far into the song you are. The most accurate was is to count how many beats there are in an entire minute. You might want to do this two times just to be sure. After you find out how many beats there are in a minute, you put it where I said to above, and then save the .sm file and open stepmania. Once you open stepmania, go to options. Go to the bottom of the options where it says "Reload Songs/Courses" and click on that.

Now you should be able to go to the edit/sync menu and find your song in the group where you placed it. Open the song up and place a note on every beat for about ten measures. If at the end of the ten measures the song doesn't feel on-sync anymore, than you tempo is probably wrong (if it feels wrong at the beginning too it's your gap, which I can explain if need be). If the tempo feels wrong then try to figure out if the tempo is too fast or too slow in comparison to the real tempo.

After you figure out which way you need to change the tempo, press "home" to return to the top of the song. Here you should see a number next to the chart, this number should be the tempo. When your on the same bar as this number press F7 or F8 to toggle the tempo up or down (if the tempo seems to fast in comparison to the song, then you would use F7 to toggle it down, opposite if the tempo seems slow). Try making adjusments based on how off it feels. You might want to start off going down/up in increments of .10. Once it starts to feel off in the other direction start to move back in the opposite direction.

After your done here you should be able to step your song. If you notice that the tempo seems off again than you may need to readjust back up at the top. Also make sure that there is no where in the song where the tempo changes, otherwise your steps will not match your music.

If you don't understand part of this just lemme know and I'll try to elaborate.

Well I totally chose the WRONG song for my first one, It has small BMP changes all over the place, and it's really pissing me off because I don't know how to do that.

I'l choose another song and get back to you.

I found a good song With one BMP change, at I'm at that part right now, I'll look in the stikies first. If I can't figure it out, then I'll ask, but As of Now I'm doing really well actually (at least I think so).

Thanks for all the help everyone.
