          Re: first stepfile

It was.... an interesting first attempt. Don't be afraid to layer sounds together to make a good combination. With a little work this file could turn out to be extremely fun to play.

Also mix up the patterns a little more! I personally would not like to hit an 8th note jackhammer for over 10 seconds unless the music really calls for it

Good luck and have fun! It was really interesting to look at and I hope you make improvements and get better!

i've cut the jacks to be shorter and they have more pitch relevance now

                oh hmm

i was worried about i was overstepping the song and making the file not fit the mood well. i dont think there's anything else i can layer on besides the 16th notes in the beat but i did add a few sounds that slipped past me the first time

                  Re: first stepfile

will throw in my 2c because bored

-assuming you used the sm5 editor to make this, download arrow vortex and use that instead because sm5 editor is SUCK
-music offset should be -0.029. that's like the first thing you should do when you open a file, change the offset because leaving it at 0 is often wrong
-there are some spots where there should be jumps when 2 violin notes are playing at the same time, like the very first note of the chart. likewise there are some places where there's only 1 violin note playing (beat 94.50 for instance) yet you stepped it as a jump. tl;dr, need to pay attention more to what the violin is doing
-starting from beat 16.00, i can't really tell what you're layering in with the hands; i would first assume that they were layering in the snare or some shit, but in that case you'd be doing so very inconsistently
-could pay attention more to what the percussion is doing in certain sections, particularly starting at 48.00 which is just straight quarter note hands/quads
-also again at 48.00 idk what you're doing with those hands
-32nd grace notes at 113.63 and 114.13 are just str8 up wrong so remove them
-conversely there are some places where you *didn't* step graces, like there should be a 32nd at 112.38 and 116.5
-overall need to revise the entire banjo section because most of it isn't really rhythmically accurate, not gonna go over every error
-idk what those 8th notes at 201.00 are going to, should prolly remove
-same issue at 241.00 with the hands, too unclear as to what sound they're going to
-at 241.00, kinda assumed you were stepping the melody with jump, but that expectation is broken at 257.50 and 258.50 which should have jumps
-some other spots where i'd expect the melody to be stepped as jumps: 284.00, 296.00, idk maybe some other spots im missing
-song basically repeats itself from beat 368.00 and to the end so you could probably cut that entire section out in audacity

tl;dr i think your layering scheme is pretty inconsistent overall, which makes it difficult to understand what sounds you're stepping
could probably layer in the percussion more to make certain sections busier
and pay attention mroe to details i guess idk l000ll

                      updated:

-it's now .sm, and the last 46 seconds of music have been cut
-banjo section has fewer grace notes, making it significantly easier
-the section after that has a bunch of 16th notes now, making it significantly harder
-snares and violins are mapped with more consistency in the first bit

i ought to actually write a followup review

firstly you cut off the audio slightly at the very start which pretty much fucked the entire sync of the file; it's way off now and i'm actually surprised that you didn't notice this looooooool

had to set my music offset to 0.288 to fix it. if you read this review without using that offset then the beats listed in my review wont correspond with yours

                              -2.00 should be a jump
-15.50 should be a note here for the hi hat thingy
-20.00 note on column 4 should be on 3, the synth changes pitch there
                              -27.00, 35.00, 43.00: should be a hand (snare)
-42.50, 46.50: should be a jump (kick drum)
-44.00 not sure why you stopped layering in the anchor here since the synth is still playing there
-48.00 still straight 4th notes and it's boring as fuck. as i've said there are a bunch of sounds you could be stepping here, namely the percussion. overall there are spots where you *do* layer in the percussion sometimes, but it's very inconsistent
-57.00, 61.00, 89.00, 93.00: there shouldn't be grace notes in these spots imo, just make these regular jumps
                              -79.75 should be a 16th note here
                              -92.00 should be a jump
-112.50 to 113.50: these three notes are the same pitch so they should be on the same column. should pay attention to pitch relevance throughout the entire banjo section really
-also again the banjo section would feel less empty if you layered in the percussion
                              -127.81 should be a 64th note here
                              -136.38, 138.38: 32nds arent correct here, use 16ths instead
                              -147.75 missing 16th
                              -149.63 shouldnt be a 32nd here
-151.63 if you're stepping this as a grace note then be consistent. at 135.50 and 167.50 are similar sounds but you didn't step 32nds there
                              -159.63 shouldn't be a 32nd, but it should be a 64th at 159.81 instead

ok honestly too lazy to finish this for now, but heres some general advice:
                              - if you're unsure about a rhythm then slow down the song, can help with clarifying the rhythm a lot
-in arrowvortex i would also suggest going to view -> waveform then using a high-pass filter which can help sometimes in clarifying certain rhythms
-still really inconsistent layering everywhere, like stepping some kick drum but then completely ignoring that exact same kick drum a couple of measures later. should always check for layering errors, which shouldn't even be that difficult since this song is really simple
-also i noticed you cut the song as i instructed, but you literally just severed the fuck out of the song so it just ends abruptly. when you're cutting stuff in audacity the goal is to shorten the song while maintaining a smooth transition. im pretty sure you can achieve that with this song but i havent tried it myself personally

                              ok bye

edit: oh yeah one more thing studying the layering structures of other files while playing them is very useful in learning how 2 structure your own files
also read this shit if ur bored very insightful guide http://www.cosmovibe.com/ncguide/
