    Stepmania won't save steps

When I step a song in Stepmania and attempt to move it to another section, it erases the steps, leaving me with a blank simfile. Reloading songs and courses does nothing. I used the smzip to create a .sm of an mp3, then made a .dwi in notepad, saving it as all files and with a .dwi extension and it still erases the steps if moved. This makes it infeasible for me to step songs for the game. I'm not sure what to do at this point, so if there are any Stepmania gurus out there who can shed some insight as to what I can do to rectify this, I would greatly appreciate it. My current SM version is 3.9 if that's relevant.

Move your installation of stepmania outside of the program files or change your UAC settings to allow you to make changes without explicitly giving administrative privileges to what you are doing.

I'm trying to understand this; how does it connect to the problem? Or rather, what would cause a file to be overwritten with its prior contents deleted? I've never heard of this issue before.

        go to C:\Users\<Your User Here>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\StepMania\Songs

AppData is a hidden folder so if you haven't enabled viewing of those yet, do so by going to Folder and Search options accessible through windows explorer or control panel.

The (x86) is a windows 7 thing, so if you have XP or vista, it would just be Program Files. Anywho, all your songs are probably saving this folder instead of your normal program files folder, you can cut and paste the files in this folder into the ones in your normal folder and everything should save fine (that you already have), unfortunately you'll have to do this every time you create a new file, though.

If this doesn't work, something's screwed with your SM and you need a reinstall.

If I read the original post correctly he is not able to save what he does to his simfiles. Windows 7 likes to restrict what you can do in the programs files folder so either giving yourself the ability to move data into this folder without explicitly saying to do it as an administrator should work. Or just move it outside of the programs folder.

I could just be reading the post wrong because it is kind of worded strangely to me.

Thank you very much! As you suggested, it was windows 7 on a power trip, not Stepmania. After disabling UAC I was able to successfully move the song to another folder without losing the steps. Again, many thanks! ^_^
