    Noteskin readability

It's often been said that a 16th stream is a lot easier to hit than an equivalent speed 32nd stream, and I think I know why:

It's the brightness of the notes.

When you're playing a 16th stream the notes go dark - light - dark - light - dark since yellows are bright as fuc. So you can zone out and use a heuristic of 'alternate light and dark'.

When you're playing a 32nd stream the orange notes are kind of in the middle brightness-wise so you can't do this anymore - but if you made orange darker than R/B/Y you could again follow the heuristic and it should be about as easy.

For similar reasons, purple should be dark and pink bright and cyan probably dark.

Any thoughts? What other factors go into making noteskins easier/harder to read? It's obvious that orbular is more readable than block, but what about orbular vs note vs cel?

      Iono.
16th stream is just fuccing aids to me.
32nd streams are my favorite. Even if it's 2x the speed of the 16ths(which it is, usually, unless you xmod), I will have better PA on the 32nd stream than the 16th.
It just doesn't look right at all.
The down arrow looks like it's a bit lower than all the other notes and it just fuccs me up.

Especially when I use the "mini" mod; the arrows just do not seem to be linear.

How does that follow? Flat has the least differentiation between note intervals (by virtue of everything being the same colour lol)

I think the contrast between the notes and the BG plays a bigger role than the brightness of the notes itself. More contrast = More readable most of the time.

But assuming it's on a plain flat background, I think it's mostly based on that person's preference and what they are most used to seeing. (In terms of shape, size and color)

PS: Also wasn't there a noteskin that made the 4ths blue, 8ths yellow, 16ths brown, etc. I guess you can test it out on that.

The orange 32nds could be darker so they provide contrast in a roll of 64th notes. Unfortunately, though, keeping that consistency is impossible with a 32nd note roll; the other colors surrounding it are so bright. The people behind the original color choices must not have thought that 32nds and 24ths would be used so often in roll patterns...

Hm, never though about it in this aspect. I guess that's why I can destroy songs like AAA and Klung Kung, but am horrible on Monstrous Turtle's 32nd stream...

monstrous turtles is loads faster though. a better comparison would be monstrous turtles vs purple or something

good threads like this make me really wish you posted more on kbo, lol. I suppose you could use something like DDR's vivid to solve this, though it's sort of scattershot with respect to readability.
