                          Get ready for some hardcore StepMania analysis at 5 in the morning.


                          When analyzing the different types of skill, one has to consider how these different parameters, when altered, changes the behavior of the players and the scores they get.

                          For this reason, you cannot simply divide skill into random categories that come to mind such as "jacks, trills, MA, PA, speed, etc." because they are poorly defined and do not take into consideration the higher level groups. There needs to be specific reasoning and a method to determining what attributes can be grouped.

                          Two categories can only be considered separate skill groups if by comparing extreme select cases of each, it nets significantly different results. For example, "timing, stream, and jumpstream" cannot be divided into categories in such a manner because a skilled player can hit both high speed stream and jumpstream at about the same proficiency level, given that the consistent NPS of each pattern is approximately equal.

                          Of course, this does not mean that there is only a single way to categorize StepMania skill, but it does mean that it severely limits the number of appropriate ways to divide skills into categories.

                          Here is my list of skills (and some examples of subcategories):

                          Reading Ability: This is defined as how well a player can process the patterns in the mind and be able to react to them. Because this category involves the interpretation of patterns, any skills related to general patterns would fall under this as a subcategory.
                          - Stream
                          - Jumpstream
                          - Holdstream
                          - Random notes/Colored note solos
                          - General combo ability

                          Physical Limit: Of course, there is a difference between reading high speed patterns and hitting them appropriately. Any specific patterns that involve pushing the limit of physical ability would fall under this category.
                          - Jacks
                          - Trills
                          - Staircases
                          - Brackets
                          - Runningmen
                          - Endurance
                          - Pettanko

                          Accuracy: This speaks for itself. Accuracy demonstrates an extremely high proficiency level of hitting patterns that are generally underneath the reading threshold (assuming that if you can't read a chart, you can't possibly hit it accurately).
                          - Marvelous Accuracy
                          - Perfect Accuracy
                          - Accuracy in consistent rhythm
                          - Accuracy in irregular rhythm

                          Flexibility/Translation/Learning: The ability to effectively tackle a chart with irregular features, as well as being able to adapt to these features quickly. The key feature of this category is being able to react and having fast reflexes.
                          - Effect Modifiers (Tornado, Dizzy, etc)
                          - X-mod charts
                          - Tackling anything new (different scroll direction, playstyle, etc)

                          Some subcategories can technically go into several categories, depending on their context. For example, mines, if new to the player, fall into not only the Reading Ability category, but also the Flexibility/Translation/Learning category. Depending on how fast the bursts are, bursts can go into either/both the Reading Ability category and the Physical Limit category. It simply depends on the situation.

                          Also note that the subcategories I listed are mostly general StepMania-specific ideas, while the higher level categories can applied to rhythm gaming as a whole. This is the advantage of dividing the skill categories in such a way.

                            Accurate on EVERY PATTERNZ (what were you thinking ? My MA is getting better every day)
                            Speed on no-jump streams (As long as I can A Disregard, I'll consider myself having a good speed)
                            Speed on minitrills
                            Sometimes I just go berzerk and get a LUCKY SPEED on some super fast dumpstream.

                            It kills my score :
                            Bad anticipation. EVERY ****ING TIME.
                            Awkward patterns (it goes together with the bad habits)
                            It seems I can't vibrate for shit
                            Shit stamina (oh hey, ironic for someone like me huh ?)
                            Shit accuracy when holding a freeze with damn notes playing around it
