This thread was pretty much posted out of completely having nothing better to do. And while I may have not been active in the forums since this year i have been around for quite a long time so you guys can completely elaborate on this if you want, but like rubix's gaming generation idea posted previously i decided to do one on stepmania. Possibly leading to the rise and the downfall of stepmania's community
First Gen(2002ish i guess): Around the time FFR and Stepmania first began to arise itself to peers. This was around the time where using the arrows was actually popular and speed mods weren't used that often. Most players had played with one hand and or index. Files in this time were heavily made from people like Toph, Arch0wl, DukAmok, and so on. Most files in this time were I believe to be seperated into either fairly easy or to incredibly BS for the time. Example would be Toph's OML, or DukAmok's one minutes edit.
Mid Gen or Second Gen (2005ish): Probably around the time where stepmania had its peak point where most of the players had played and some people had actually became quite well known because of their skill. These people would include Damien, Bluemystic, Nima, Anobody, Yesssss, and so on. This around the time where one handed had been less used because spread had been discovered and has been known to be more practical on files. While people such as Izzy, and anobody still dominated the index field, People such as Nima and Bluemystic have dominated some of the leader boards with their insane. timing. Files within this era have been slowly been adapted to be a bit harder and more adapting to spread styles where jump stream was lightly adapted into files. Step artists from this time can include Skor, AP, Moogy, Benny1, Blurk, Zaghurim, and many more.
Contemporary Gen or just last gen (not a set time): Where we lie on today when it comes to stepmania where the community is alive, but is rather hidden. Not many of the great players put their names out there like they used to. However the skill in which players had gotten good at normally split themselves into two categories which is mainly Dump and MA type play. Many of the MA players consist of AlexDest, Gundam Dude, Icecubez, and Tera. While the Dump category of players consist of Dossar, Staiain, Kaiten123, and so on. At this files have also been categorized differently. Within this time MA files began to be a bit less straightforward and easy and have become more technical. As for dump well dump is just dump. Example of these files include Gundam Dude, Kommisar, Rebound, Rogdor, WC, Icyworld, and so on.
This concludes the Gens of stepmania which is obviously missing alot. Just a rough draft i guess. Please help me elaborate you stepmania pros and veterans if you wish. I am planning to add more.
