    Help with Stepmania?

I want to download and play Stepmania again but my only problem is I run on Crapsta so anyone know a good version to download to help me cut down on lag?

There's only one stepmania? SMC-SS might have less lag but it's kinda all around the same.

EDIT: Unless you're talking about a screen recorder program?

What do you mean one? I've seen several different versions played by friends and in videos. I kind of want the newest version but I'm certain it will lag like hell.

I didn't Stepmania lagged to be honest. I know 3.9a does. Maybe 4.0. But as far as I know, 3.9 and 3.95 are golden. I think 3.95 may be a bit cleaner too. Look in the Stepmania et. al forum and just lurk some of the OP's.

I'll do that and see if I can get playing lag free. Which may be doubtfull, I have to play FFR on a standalone or I lag so bad I fail easy songs.

EDIT: I also feel stupid for not posting this in the SM forum, I actually forgot it existed...

            Re: Help with Stepmania?

            I hope you mean Vista.

I've had two people I know off the top of my head play SM on vista. One had plenty of lag problems, the other one has had none. So I doubt it's only Vista that affects it.

I'd suggest working your way down from newest to oldest. sm-ssc on its google project page should work. They also have the most support at the moment, running a 24 hour IRC and having plenty of active work being done. If not, try SM 4 CVS (There is also a modded 1.1 version that works great, takes the advantages of 3.95 and adds them in, so ask me if you want that). If even SM 4 CVS doesn't work, then the lowest I'd go is 3.95. Only because 3.9 is becoming outdated if it's not already. There are hardly any people theming or creating noteskins and such. It's much more logical to put focus on newer clients anyways.

Also, I didn't name the alpha series because sm-ssc is based off of it iirc. And I didn't suggest the SM 4 Beta Series because they are having trouble with recording scores on the SMO server. If you plan to play offline it's fine. We're currently working on the scoring system for the server ourselves. I couldn't get info from sm beta developers, but our server developer is working on a universal server side solution for scoring. Even OpenITG may start to record scores accurately.

Hope that helps. If you need links/resources, let me know.

I downloaded 3.9 because 3.95 wasn't supporting noteskins, it isn't giving me any problems, and I'm only playing offline for now.
I may try 4 soon not sure. I mostly want SM for some certain song packs and not much more.

If that's the case, then yea, you're doing fine. There are a lot of noteskins (better ones imo) on newer clients nowadays though. If you told me this 6 months ago, I might've agreed. But some good stuff has been made lately. And if there really is a noteskin you want that can't be used on newer clients, ask Jousway. He's a member of many forums, including this one. One of the best noteskin creators I've seen. He could make one of those 3.9 noteskins for a newer client without breaking a sweat.

Just to make a point, there are newer and nicer looking clients now. It's like windows xp and windows 7. Yea they both work, but windows 7 is bit more appealing. I guess it could be preference though.

Edit: Yea 3.95 won't support 3.9 noteskins. iirc, 3.95 and 4.0 noteskins are grouped together, and sm 4 alpha series and sm-ssc are grouped together. 3.9/3.9+ has its own group, but noteskins for that group are seldom made. Something about build, source code, etc. Don't know too much.

                Correct if I'm wrong anyone.

I ran the 4.0 CVS on a Windows 2K machine with integrated graphics and about 128mb of ram... processor was around 1.6ghz. (at 640x480 res)

So if that can run the 4.0 CVS then I'm sure your Vista rig can.

It's more than that. Something I don't understand of course, but some computers just get touchy when they have vista. My friend with no problems on vista has average specs, but the guy with problems had a pretty good computer. Vista is just tricky in general. sm is usually more predictable on XP or windows 7.

isn't there some log file somewhere that explains exactly what you need to be able to run stepmania smoothly?

edit: found it you can download 3.9 and run it smoothly if you have dese specs or better

DirectX 8.0 is required before installing StepMania. If DirectX 8.0 is not installed on your computer, the StepMania installer will display a warning and abort the installation.
