General question about Stepmania. Please help.

Well, since I've been playing SM for about a month on and off now, and want to be playing seriously again, I need this question answered. Is it better to have a lower speed mod (let's say a change from C725 TO C700) in the long run? I mean, I can adjust, but I'm not sure if it helps. I've heard it IS good, but then again, everybody is different. I'm not sure. MA wise, reading wise, etc.

    Let me know.

    Spank you guyz. :]

I'm currently using C600...planning on upping it to C650 or something in the near future to help me read better.

I think most people will say raising speed mods is better, but at the end of the day, it's your choice.

It really depends on how well your reading ability is and how quickly you can adjust to faster speeds. I used to play C600 for nearly a year before changing to C620. Took me about a week to adjust just from that small bump but in the long run I've gotten way better at MA and reading. Since I'm accustomed to reading C620, I haven't had any plans to bump my speedmod up since in general I'm a slow reader compared to most people and I'm comfortable with my speed. True, others would question why I play with a slow speedmod and why I haven't bumped it up but overall it's just personal preference really.

I don't think 25 or even 5 BPM would matter in the end, but that could be just me.

as long as you're within 600-800 it should be fine but experiment

Ultimately, the higher the speed mod the better, because the notes are more spread out, making them easier to read and easier to time. However, once you pass a certain threshold it becomes harder and harder to react to the notes.

Hence, you should find something that fits YOU. Don't ask us what speed you should use, this is a personal thing. Find where the peak of your ability lies. (This also means that as you play you may need to adjust either faster or lower [usually faster])

In the long run, it's better to use a comfortable speedmod. I mean, look at mine, it's only 650 on distant. Overhead I only do 550-600 and even then 600 can be uncomfortable at times.

Higher speedmods can help with marvelous accuracy, but sometimes it's better to use a speedmod more suitable for your reading abilities.

I use C620 most of the time.

I think when I first started playing SM, I was at C550. Sometimes, after enough playing (I mean months), you'll feel like the notes are slow, and you'll feel like bumping your Cmod up 25 or 50 to adjust.

Other times, you might hit a plateau in accuracy or general ability. When I've had those, I raised my Cmod and just kept playing until I got used to it. So if you don't mind putting up with a bit of time spent getting relatively bad scores, it works better for you in the long run. In the past 5 or 6 months alone, I've bumped mine from 620 to 660-670 in increments of 10 at a time to force myself to read faster. It seems to have worked so far in terms of improvement, but it might be more of a personal decision.
