    Question about split-second holds

    Hi all,

New to SM, 1 month playing hardcore since my counter-strike ban - struggle with the average 14/15 stepper.
    My speed atm is C650.

Here's my query: What's the deal with the micro-holds that appear to last <0.05 seconds yet are so easy to not get an O.K. in (a 'No' in dubaiOne theme.. forget what the indicator is on default skin)? Like i'd be holding the key down for a considerable time considering the speed of the song and i'll see in my peripheral vision my life meter go down. Do i just have to hold the step down for longer?

    Re: Question about split-second holds

Your theme might alter this, but by default it takes 1/4 of a second not holding a freeze for it to go N.G. (it's the value JudgeWindowSecondsOK in stepmania.ini)
I don't think playing on a higher judge effects this.

The boo window is up to 0.18 seconds either way, though, so if the minifreeze is 0.07 seconds long you could get the earliest possible boo on it, let go and have it drop just before it ends (and the longer it is the more lenient this process is). By default, though, you shouldn't be dropping such minifreezes very often.

Have you tried swapping themes, making sure you're on J4/L4 and trying the same file again to see if they drop as easily?

doubt it since rolls take even longer to break

          Re: Question about split-second holds

Yeah, they're not rolls. Normal 13 step jump streams usually (I'm not NG'ing on any Combo Breakers however).

My timing is still really undeveloped, so it does make sense that if i'm N.G'ing 30-40% of micro-freezes when I treat them as pretty much normal steps it's a result of getting a -great and not holding the keystroke down long enough.

Life and Judge are all default (4-4): haven't changed with my theme. Next song I realize the problem occurring, I'll switch themes and test it. If that doesn't work it's probably just me tapping to short + getting -greats.

          Thanks Patashu for your help!

PS A quick question to people reading this: What do people mean by 'charts'? Do they just mean all the steps in a simfile?

It would be a chart of all the steps in a file yes, also known as a step chart.

I will use musical lyrics for my siggy.

              Thanks.

Also, why is everything in these forums displaying for me backwards? What I mean is the original thread starting post is at the end of the thread and it works backwards from there with the most recent post ending up where the #1 post should be according to time chronology.

Also, something's really munted with my micro freezes. I hold down the freeze consciously for like 0.8 of a second and it still N.G's.... will now put theme to default and test.

                Re: Question about split-second holds

A chart is actually one difficulty in a file, not all the difficulties in it. To refer to them collectively you'd say 'file' or 'file for song' or 'person's file for song'

Some people refer to entire files as a chart if it only has one difficulty.

None of the upper-tier players make multi-charts anyway, except for edits/beginners.
Why would you put that in your signature? You've lost your signature rights for a month. (You'll get them back on March 10th, 2012.)

It actually does. You have to hold down freezes considerably longer than you're used to, and when you come across sections of hand freezes or regular, overlapping freezes, it can be fatal.

Yes sorry about that i should have been more specific. Most files i have on SM only have a heavy or oni chart.
