    question

What is the difference between the .DWI and .SM files? I'm trying to clear up space on my computer, and stuff in my SM folder takes up quite a lot. I know that you only need 1 of the 2 files in order to play a song, and I've been deleting the .SMs because they take up more space. This isn't going to negatively affect me in any way, right?

      Actually, no.

There are two main step simulation programs out there; StepMania and Dance With Intensity, I'm pretty sure. They are both quite close, but are a bit different. I recommend using StepMania because it is more common than Dance With Intensity is. The .sm and .dwi are the stepchart files for StepMania and Dance With Intensity. Its usually a good idea to keep both files, because there are people out there that play Dance With Intensity. I'm pretty sure StepMania can read .dwi files, unless you have been encountering problems, then no. You definitely want to keep both .sm and .dwi files though, as they are the data sources for stepcharts.

What I did was take all of my StepMania data (all 14 GBs) and put it into an extra hard drive I had, so then it wouldn't bog down the main hard drive of my computer.

.dwis are smaller than .sms but do not support rolls and mines and possibly other stuff (couples/solo/piu/etc?)

yeah, this seems to be right. The mines in the files disappeared, but I don't really care for them too much, and rolls don't work on 3.9 anyway. Thanks.

                  That.
.SM files only take up like 28KB on longer files, you realize how little of space that is >_>

                    I do...

I downloaded a pack with ~75 files; I have it cut down to 16. (hmm, that's almost 4/5ths of the pack...)

I'm also deleting the easier and BS edit steps for songs that have multiple difficulties.

                          Re: question

Nowadays .dwi file is just needed for FFR submission, and usually only .sm file is needed for stepmania files.

I never use the package folder..

What you can do is rename the smzip > .zip and extract it in the main stepmania directory.

                              That works for me.
