Can anyone help me in SM?

Alright. Lemme put this as clearly as possible. I fail at SM. I try to make new folders to make new steps, but the program doesn't recognize it. I know how to create new steps, but it only works for a pre-existing file that I downloaded and the steps are already there. How do I start from scratch with my own MP3?
