Stepmania(ctrl+r)

Okay so when you're editing a song in Stepmania you can
press ctrl+r and it lets you insert arrows with the arrow key pad, but
it only lets you do for a couple of beats and then you have to preview
the song and start pressing ctrl+r again.

Is there a way to make it so you can insert arrows with the keypad for
the whole song without having to press it over and over?

You can hit the spacebar to choose where to begin and end the area you record in, it's not limited, you can go forever, without it ever stopping. Although, you'll have to know how long the song is in seconds to know where you want to stop recording, or you can just hit esc when the song finishes.

You really shouldn't if you want to make stepfiles, unless you're just placing in 4th notes =/

You can directly step songs by playing them as if they were already stepped? o.o

No, seriously, don't use Ctrl+R. I've never seen it alone lead to a good simfile. If you're going to use Ctrl+R, at least take a good deal of time going back and redoing everything piece by piece to make sure it's synced, good patterns, etc.
Of course, you should do that anyways if you don't use Ctrl+R, so I don't see the point of using it in the first place.

If you plan on making Pad files through the use of CTRL+R, don't bother trying the songs on pad.
