Help me make my SM work...

So I got a now video card today. The box said it was Vista ready so I bought it. I'm pretty sure ive installed all driver and all it's updates and when I run SM I get the following message.

There was an error while initializing your video card.

PLEASE DO NOT FILE THIS ERROR AS A BUG!

    Video Driver: Radeon X1650 Series

    Initializing OpenGL...
Your system is reporting that OpenGL hardware acceleration is not available. Please obtain an updated driver from your video card manufacturer.

    Initializing Direct3D...
Your system is reporting that Direct3D hardware acceleration is not available. Please obtain an updated driver from your video card manufacturer.

    Help me fix this please.

Re: Help me make my SM work...

If you installed the driver that came on the CD, go to ATI's site and download and install the latest drivers from there. If that doesn't work, then it's just likely that you don't have hardware acceleration enabled. That's a Windows setting, so I'll try and find it for you.

EDIT: Oh wait, nevermind. Hold on a sec...need to look something up.

EDIT 2: Okay, took some searching but I think I found a solution. I'm assuming you're using Vista as per the "Vista ready" comment, so I had to look up how to deal with hardware acceleration on it, since I use XP.

Anyway, in Vista, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel, double-click System, then go to the Performance tab, and click Graphics. The hardware acceleration slider should be in there. If it's at "none" then you don't have it enabled, so slide it to the right until SM works.

Of course, if you have all the proper drivers (make sure they're Vista-compatible drivers), and hardware acceleration enabled, then I don't know what the problem is.

I go to the performance thing and then it brings me to a performance index thing with a base score.

      I'm so lost here.

I just tried to play a video and my Windows Media Player won't play it.

I'll try and get access to a Vista computer to see for myself what you have to do. But from what I read, in the Performance tab of the window that opens, there should be a button called "Graphics" or a link to "Graphics" or something like that. See if you can find it in the mean time.

Oh, and Windows Media Player has problems playing .avi files without an addition to it, so that could be a completely unrelated problem. Might be, might not be. I can't really tell.

          Okay, update.

Turns out that the instructions I found earlier were misnamed, that's actually for an earlier version of Windows. After doing some more research, it seems that hardware acceleration, for whatever reason, is disabled in Vista. I'll do some more research to see if there's a workaround to this, but until then, I don't know if I can help you further.

            Vista sucks, stick with XP.

            Problem solved.

Re: Help me make my SM work...

              I fixed the problem.

Vista didn't properly install the drivers from the CD for some reason.

After that when I went to ATI's website to download the updates it couldn't properly update for that reason.

I wiped all the ATI stuff off of my PC and downloaded the drivers from ATI's website and it worked fine.
