Converting DWI to SM and Using Hands

As I'm sure many people like myself have seen, many keyboards don't allow you to press more than two buttons simultaneously without it beeping angrily at you. However, people would not make simfiles with Hands if there was a not a way around this. So I implore you FFRF, aid me in making my keyboard listen to me.

And more importantly, I've found that many songs I love are DWI files and not SM files. This creates a huge problem for me as I play a lot of custom songs on at my local arcade (ITG2). And this made me wonder how to convert DWI to SM. I believe I heard of people doing it before, but I've never pried into the matter much.

One last thing I feel the need to mention, is if anyone knows of a free mp3 -> ogg converter. I've tried about ten different ones which all ran out after about six "trial" uses.

    Thanks for any help.

To convert a .dwi to a .sm, just open in the Stepmania editor and save it. In the top corner, it'll say : "Saved as sm. and .dwi". Then, just check the song folder. It'll be there for whatever song. As for a converter, I use this one:
http://www.mp3towma.com/. Didn't have to download the full version when I got it, but they may have changed it, although I have converted several songs even though it says the limit is 10. Give it a try.

Sounds easy enough. I'll check out that converter. Thanks a lot for the help.

I suppose I'll keep bugging people till someone tells me about doing Hands. ;o

Oh, right :P Some keyboards can only handle certain combinations for hands in a simfile, others just don't work with it at all. I think it's like that with most older keyboards, because with any keyboard I've ever used that's more than a couple years old, they don't work. Your only options are to either get a new one entirely, or don't use hands.

        Here's a pic I found of the one I use :http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-Microsoft-...ayphotohosting

Meh, silly Microsoft with their working keyboards. I just got a brand-new HP keyboard (it's all shiny silver and black). It lets me do hands...just nothing with the top arrow T_T

What you could do is remap the arrow keys to something else in the same "design," like 8456 on the number pad. A lot of keyboards lock up if you press more than two arrow keys, but are generally okay with more than two other keys. Mine works like that.

Yeah, but that would require me to unlearn over 2 years of playing StepMania/FFR with the arrow pad. =/

It would just be your hand in the same "position" but in a slightly different "location." Try it; it shouldn't feel that different.

I've actually tried before, by going to AWSD and than again with Num Lock>5123. My hand rests on the edge and makes it difficult to move ANYWHERE.

Using arrow keys? Try turning off num lock.

Encoding to .ogg? Try Audacity. It also has other uses.

try ASKL or QWOP. It works and gives your hands more room.
