Problem with Freeze Arrows

so yeah i just got stepmania and i've loaded songs and stuff

I use hotkeys to play spread on my laptop for FFR and so you'd think i can use those same keys for SM right?

well, you can it's just when a freeze arrow comes up and you hit it it counts the arrow but you can hold it as long as you wont it wont register it'll just go straight to N.G.

Can someone help me with my problem?

Turn the hotkey off and just do key configurations in the options.
