Lag with Stepmania?

Ahoy, Destructiox here, no-one knows me (:P) so cutting straight to my situation and problem: I have had stepmania (version 3.9 IIRC) for about a month, downloading and playing various stepfiles. I've hit about 560 songs now, in roughly a dozen+ folders, (just providing some information) and for no reason that i can ascertain, during a song stepmania will start to lag. Terribly. I put on the FPS thing in the corner, and at the beginning of a song it is approx. 210+, but during most songs it drops below 200, and starts to lag. Has anything liek this happened before, and is there anything i could try to stop/prevent this? Thanks to all in advance for your help.

i think the only way to prevent lag is to delete some of those songs.
or possibly delete other programs

I've heard that the number of songs shouldn't affect the performance. I have over 1000 songs and SM runs just fine for me (I'm also using 3.9). My suggestion would be to try not to run any programs in the background. That's what causes lag 98% of the time. Also if your computer specs aren't very great, that could be a factor as well.

hmm....indeed, i used windowed mode, as i also run msn basically every moment of my computer time. If the problems persists tho, expect me to post in this thread again -.-' thanks for all the good, detailed replies
