sm and dwi files

I need help with a complicated issue. I'm wanting to make my own song in stepmania. I have the song the back ground the banner the dwi and the sm files but I need to edit the sm and dwi files. I 'm wondering what to do.

If someone has the time, could they explain the parts of sm and dwi files?

When I'm adding my own song?
Would that mean adding the song without using a sm/dwi?
I don't want to edit the arrows I want to do the beats speed changes stops and end songs.
