Is it possible to change Stepmania's special keys (eg. tab for speed up?) It's frustrating to try to hit alt+tab to switch windows and just have the menu speed up.

I don't think so. But if you hit the "`" key it slows it down, and if you hit "`" and tab at the same time, it slows the frame rate to 0.
